yesterday i just went and got my car tuned with my new dominator 1.5 xt-r. it made 344 whp. its a 2012 STI sedan
it was a mustang dyno. elevation 1850 ft. 60 degrees f my other mods. 900cc injectors perrin fmic dw65 fuel pump invidia catless dp magnaflow 3 in exhaust grimm speed ebcs agency power CAI turbo smart recirc/blow off valve tuner was having problems between 2700-3000 rpm. it would go very lean. the car is still having that problem when i drive around. car is hesitating like it hit a wall. anyone have any suggestions ? am i missing some mods ? just seems like the turbo wants to give more. he added more boost but the car went down in hp. need some help lol

No offense, but it makes me sad to read stories like this about tuners. If they're worth their weight in **** they should be working with you to meet your power goals. "adding boost" to a stock motor that is already lean sounds like homicide to me.
Not the answer you're looking for obviously, but that's not going to be a cheap motor to rebuild. Can you log? Does the ecu pull fuel back during those lean spots? |

i can log it.
he took the boost back down to 21.5. it was when he was trying to get more power out of it. said it was like the turbo was choking. said i need a new inlet and up pipe. im just trying to get another opinion before i go buying more parts. |

Basically, what you're problem seems to be IMHO is that you have a really good turbo but half the parts you need to see the power from it. I am surprised you're tuner even tried to tune it as it sits. you have a very restrictive stock up pipe and inlet paired with a big intercooler system and a downpipe. You are replacing a turbo that flows 38lbs per min with one that flows 49 lbs per minute and only replacing half of the parts that the turbo bolts up to.
Get an up pipe, external wastegate, and a perrin turbo inlet. also if you were running a bigger top mount you would see much faster spool with that turbo than with the fmic (i used to run a 1.5xtr). TGV deletes would not hurt either. if anyone thinks i am off track here let me know |

Its the fuel pressure regulator its a common problem with the newer sti's my friend had the same problem with his 2012 with a 2.5xtr. He installed a 2007 sti fpr kit and agency power parallel rails and lines and no more stumble between 2500-3000 rpm. To bad he fried his rings befor he got the chance to correct the problem. He put in new cp pistons and still had the stumble until he changed out the regulator and bam no more issues he is making 450whp on e85 now.

344hp with that turbo on a Mustang dyno is pretty good. Average hp for that turbo on 93 octane at that boost level is around 330.

Alot of good tuners know this already and will use aftermarket or the older sti fuel regulators. As far as upgrading your uppipe and turbo inlet has nothing to do with running lean but only leaving some HP on the table. I think u need a new tuner that knows what he's doing as he shouldn't have left u in this state with proper knowledge on how to fix your lean condition Last edited by trev762; 10-06-2012 at 02:14 PM. |

Contact joe@goodspeed for an ingeniously simple solution for the stumble...
EL header, up pipe, and inlet would certainly help with peak numbers.... |

so this is what they wrote me back lol.
We do not have a joe that works here. I would suggest contacting your tuner about this assuming that the car does not have a boost leak or a vacuum line that is pinched. Thanks Craig- |

It was mentioned earlier, but I just want to reiterate two points.
1) That power is exactly what you should expect with that turbo on that dyno 2) Your stumble is being caused by the factory FPR. Either get an aftermarket FPR or swap in one from the older models. I am not guessing here, and neither are the two people who posted earlier about this problem. This is WELL known and WELL documented, get a new FPR or you'll be needing new pistons soon. |
