So where is the question exactly? As there should be several guides. Just do a search.

Take a look at the light output pattern and cuttoffs from these projectors and lens. See which one you like.
http://www.jvxdriver.com/single_comparison.htm Then email Matt at the retrofitsource. Ask him what parts you will need to achieve something like that. He will tell you what parts you will need and if theres fitment issues. http://www.theretrofitsource.com/ Once you began work, you will have issues. Talk with these guys at the hidplanet for advice about any issues. I.e... cuttoffs, hotspot, glare, aiming.... For technical advice about parts and aiming go here, http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/forum.php In the meantime, search nasioc for some retro 04 wrx projects to get an idea of whats involve. If it looks like something you can manage then do it. If not then its better to pay someone to do it for you. Once you began, you cant got back. If possible try to aim for the infiniti FX projector with FX-R lens or the Acura TL. Those are the best that Ive seen so far. While at it, you can add an sti headlight leveler. If the retrofit is done right, you will put the headlights of some of the more expensive cars to shame when doing a side by side comparison. Last edited by Ysidro; 10-08-2012 at 12:40 PM. |

JVX's wall output shots are classic in HIDP. A few things about comparing those:
(1) The intensity pattern of the low vs high is usually a tradeoff; ranging from great low beam (& not so great high beam), somewhere in between, and great high beam. The same amount of light has to be distributed among these two. (2) On the low beam side, it is further distributed into a variety of tradeoffs: Bright @ center of low beam cutoff --> good distance lighting. Wide intense beam along the low beam cutoff --> good peripheral lighting. Bright from the cutoff all the way down to the floor --> excess foreground lighting ala a foglight (affects how the pupil is capable of adjusting to distance objects; not so good unless you want a foglight). There are more subtle aspects; frederik's thread in HIDP (also a Nasioc member) has a very useful visualization that helps you valuate wall output pics and how it translates to road use; then scroll to post #30 for the mapping of RX350 biX in terms of his visualization method. (link here) (3) As much effort JVX tried to put all those projectors in equal footing (in terms of the same HID capsule, ballast, lighting conditions, etc.), unit to unit variations (of the same model) does exist. Production variations may also make a unit tested have a superior or inferior cutoff shield alignment relative to other units of the same model. In addition to cutoff shield alignment, other unit to unit variations could include alignment of the HID capsule wrt to the reflector bowl, etc. These could make projector A that looks better than projector B in JVX's comparison actually not the case when you buy both. There are threads in HIDP discussing how to tune certain projectors to maximize their potential. |
