Default QUESTION/SOLUTION INQUIRY: 2012 Impreza Trunk/Luggage Light 5 Door

Hi guys

here is my finished product for LED strip lighting that works with the cargo light which was also switched to smd led panel.

QUESTION: the double sided tape on the strip doesnt work well with the felt headliner on the 2012 impreza.

It appears the WRX has a plastic trim on the headliner by the back door....been trying to figure out how to correct the strip from falling down.

I found some 3m spray adhesive which should work since it says it sticks to plastic, rubber, felt etc. but issue is what if the light breaks and i take it off, i assume my headliner will have a glue stain from the spray?

anyone have some good ideas to resolve this? ive tried different double sided tape and still not working.

any type of hooks or clips someone can recommend?

thanks in advance

you need to do what i did, remove the grey plastic strip, dril holes in the same intervals as the light strip. hot glue it in place on the backside fo the plastic strip from the roof and then re-install it

here is mine installed, i only did a 12" strip so you would need to imagine it bigger

Hi mattesonb thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the 2012 impreza doesnt have a plastic trim where the edge of the headliner is. Its all felt headliner with no plastic trim whatsoever aside from where the SRS side curtain airbag are (side pillars). So with that said I cant stick it to anything plastic nor drill holes (that would be the ideal solution as you stated) but yea, im stuck with felt headline all the way from the cabin to the back door.

if anyone has done this on a regular (non-wrx/sti) hatch 2012 impreza please chime in as I am open to any suggestion to getting to this to work. Right now after couple of new strips of 3m permanant adhesive double sticky tape it is droppy like a old ladies boobies.

i think the spray adhesive is my last choice which i prefer to avoid since it will leave stains. It might be a good idea but who knows how long this led strip would last before it breaks or something. I could always replace it over the glue stains but trying to find a better solution before I go that route.

i might fab up some sort of trim piece and adhere it to the side pillars or something but that might take some time.

I'm interested in installing LED strip light for the trunk also.
How did you guys hook up the power?

Did you pull the lens cover off the original trunk light to get to the wires?

I'm having problems with removing the lens cover.
I didn't want to pry too hard with a screw driver and crack the plastic.
Any tips?

I was able to find you tube videos of the dome and map light lens cover, so no problems with removing those. But didn't have a clue on how to remove this truck one.

hi yes, i removed the original trunk light and tapped into the wires there so that my headliner strip works in conjunction with the original trunk light. you will need a flat head screw driver and i would put some electrical tape on it so it doesnt scratch the car trim etc but u can pry from the sides not the top or bottom. it will come off, just jiggle it out. I was afraid of messing it up also but it wont, you just need to dig into the side and it will pop off when you pry it.

hope that helps.

This is what I'm in the process of doing. Leds on the removeable bar and a new power jack in the back for it.

3M double sided tape is the best. What I used. Just put it on the plastic, and then drill a hole for the wire and run it down to the side light that's factory.

Thank you for your replies.

@Blackmamba, so how did you end up completing this project?
Did you just tape it to the felt liner?

@subiesinyard, your install look great. However it looks more involved than what I'm willing to do. I'm hoping to do what Blackmamba did, with no drilling involved.

I'll try prying off the truck light using Blackmamba's instruction, hopefully I don't crack that light.

I cant take credit, its chadbaldwin's thread. I'm just following his lead. Only one hole needs to get drilled and its only 5/16 so its not to bad.

I was thinking of using velcro for mounting. I'll just the the velcro with hooks and attached that to the felt material ceiling. Then the velcro would stick to the LED strip.

Velco didn't work. It wouldn't attach to the felt material.
Now I don't know if I want to go with LED strip anymore.

On the plus side I was able to pry the light cover open.
Looks like the trick is to only pry on the right side.
