Well, I bought one of those first US generation GTI's as soon as they became available. Despite being a front wheel driver, I still have fond memories of it being a truly fun yet practical vehicle. I was a hair-chested purist back then (no more), no lilly livered GT a/c or added frills for me. Too bad it wasn't that reliable.

Luckily, we don't have to be old enough to post about those cars.

Being all conservative and everything, I had a 1984 GLI(Actually lighter and better balanced, I believe). No problems except for the speakers.

Not bad looking, but still way too big to be WRC competitive. My money is still on a BRZ chassis based car.

Those JDM mags are always renderings.

So far that is the most believable rendering I've seen...Subaru take some cues from your JDM mags!!!

That render looks exactly like the 2012 Impreza sedan with a hood scoop, rear wing, and fender flares

Judging only from a picture, what else is an STI over a normal Impreza?

Yes, but the MY14 WRX is supposed to be entirely different from the Impreza. Nothing in common (at least visually).

Which is the opposite of what Subaru has been saying the 2014 WRX/STi will be, so chances are that isn't it. I would be disappointed if it were just a 2012 Impreza with the usual body/suspension upgrades to make it into a WRX/STi. The WRX and STi aren't supposed to be Imprezas anymore.

I'm with you. At this point, we've only seen concepts and heard a few details. Aesthetically I think it'll share current Subaru stylings, but I'm pretty certain it'll be a coupe.

BTW, the picture for the '14 Forester XT doesn't have a hood scoop. Instead, it has what looks like a modified bumper (low-mounted intercooler?) so do you guys think the new WRX will be similar in that respect?

Interesting question. The scoop is so signature to the brand I'd be surprised if they delete it.

Maybe they want to follow the BRZ hood lines and similar facia. Its possible they would do this. Its been said many times it should be closer in size to a BRZ than an impreza. A BRZ type hood would look kind of odd with a scoop. I would however like to at least have hood vents as long as its well executed and functional.

If the mule that this thread is about is really a hot weather tester, they'll have as close to production parts as possible, that means, unless they hid the fmic really well, and put a cut up hood on there as subterfuge, there will be a hood scoop on the next wrx and sti.

Good point, but we are forgeting that mule is still not a confirmed WRX test mule. The idea of an Impreza GT was thrown around.

Still at people who think the WRX/STi will have it's own shortened chasis. Seriously, the whole point of the WRX/STi is about utility with performance. They may drop the Impreza name from WRX/STi but the chasis will be no different.
