Default Low Oil on 2012 Impreza? 3k miles..

So i just had the low oil light come on in the car. I was wondering if adding 5w30 full syn JUST for 12 hours until it gets to the dealership is going to be ok?

Trying to figure out in my head what could be wrong with such low miles?! Had to put in a full quart in. Never went over 3k rpm first 1000 miles and never over 4k ever.

new motor?

It should be 0w20, unless you are topping it up.

what did you do after 1K miles? i treated mine like a radecar to seat the rings and break-in the honing of the cylinders. 14K miles later and good to go. i think the owner's manual says 5w30 is fine for topping off.

quite certain from reading his post he is topping off and not changing the oil with it.

Like I said before I just commute with the car and never went above 4.5k rpms. I did "top it off" with 5w30 but a whole quart...damn.

anyways just changed the oil completely today with 0w20 like it states in the manual. I guess Ill just have to keep an eye on it. like every week.

The same thing happened to me after 3k miles as well. You burned some oil...just top it off and it will be fine. I have 6700 miles on my car with no issues. Got the first oil change at 6000.

Sounds about normal. Keep an eye on your level and make sure you are keeping record of your oil changes because if you ever have a problem, Subaru will definitely ask for them. Your best bet is to check your oil every other time you fill your gas tank. If you are low, bring it to Subaru and have them look at it. If it is low, they can top it off and document it. So if a problem ever occurs you can have a record - rather than just saying "I've had to add oil since I bought it".

Your car is going to burn some oil, there is no way around it. Subaru is using low compression piston rings for less frictional drag on the engine to help MPG. Subaru's allowable spec is 1qt per 1,000 miles.

Yeah sounds as though the rings are not set yet (hopefully). i will just keep an eye on it, like the previous person said, and check the level frequently and document everything.

I'm having a similar problem. Oil light came on before the 3k first change and I topped it off with a quart. Dealer changed the oil at 3k and again the light came on at around 5k-6.5k but mysteriously went off on its own..... Then around 7.5k it came back on and when I checked the dipstick it was right in the middle of the high and low marks. I took it to subaru today and they simply said my oil was low and that they changed it to remove the light.......

Not sure if its due to my break in but I drove the car below 3k rpm for the first 500, below 4.5k rpm until 1.5k miles and only above 4.5k rpm when I'm getting on the highway after that. I do allow the engine to wind down and brake lightly especially on hills but nothing aggressive.

I'm not leaking any oil and could use a few additional opinions on the situation.

Some of the new engines that spec 0W-20 appear to be oil burners. There has been an ongoing thread on the Forester forum about oil consumption since June 2011. One of my many theories is maybe the engines are being broken in too easily like ans2k said. A other theory is maybe people are changing their factory fill too early. When did you change yours?

You can also call 1-800-Subaru3 and just tell them that you would like to open a case because you're concerned. I would also check the oil more often.

Now *I* have the oil light on. My car doesn't burn noticable oil in 5000 miles. Oil level was a couple millimeters below the top/full level hole in the dipstick before I changed the oil. I drained and refilled w/5.3 of new-stock M1 0w-20. When I first started the car, the low oil level light (the yellow one, not the red one) came on. I've never seen that in a previous fill. I checked the dipstick, and the level was maybe 1/4" below the top oil hole, so I added another 100cc. This brought the level right up to the top hole. The light is still on. I put another filter on, and added a bit more oil, and the light is still on. Went for a short drive, then stopped and restarted the car several times. The oil light stays on.

Does the oil level sender use oil conductivity to determine level?
