One of my 9th-grade students, years ago, took himself and several peers for a ride in his grandmother's GL. Got it up to 70 coming into a 20-mph curve. Rolled the car, ejected passengers, fatality. Ironically the underage driver walked away -- he was the only one wearing his seatbelt.
I've seen several students die this way over my 20 years as a teacher. My ex-vice-principal had a saying for kids like this: "They think the rules don't apply to them. But the laws of physics apply to everybody."

we cant really put all blame on it being a 300hp awd car for causing the crash, because 100mph is all the same in everycar. but with it being an sti, it just makes it to easy to get to that dangerous point or provoke bad behavior.

Who cares who's falt it is that he crashed people die in accidents like this all the time. All I can say is if I was in the car I would tell the clown to slow down in the rain at 3 am in a car he barely drove plus he had his permit? Doing a 100 with out a legit licence. Kinda scetchy

Yeah, lets give our adolescent teenage son w/ a permit a 2012 STi so he can take his drunk friends around in a very powerful vehicle... and they thought he was going to be responsible at 17 with a car like that? LOL, please.
Yeah, it's sad.. But what do you expect nowadays? Ignorant parents that shouldn't be parents. |

I agree ^^^ I don't really understand the point in giving your 17 year old "kid" that car. I was 19 when I bought mine and I still acted like a hot shot. I seriously can't imagine how he was with it. The ego of owning a brand new sports car.. I know the feeling. Too bad his parents didn't think about this happening. It's sad yes, but definitely not surprising.

It's not that simple. I was riding with a friend when he rolled his car 3 times. We came to a stop upside down in field. I was telling him to chill out and slow down or let me out, but it's not like I could've just jumped out. I even threatened to pull his e-brake. Needless to say, we are no longer friends.

Only one very important question remains.
Does this go into how Subaru saved my life? The driver did survive after all. Edit: In spite of the tragedy I'm really surprised anyone did survive. |

Seatbelts - got to wear them! When I was young we saw a video called "room to live". It showed horrific crashes with mangled cars that people survived because they wore seatbelts.

Moral of the story? It doesn't matter what your in, if the driver is incompetent, then the driver is incompetent. That truck reached a top speed of around 90mph, and would barely get out of it's own way, yet I almost died from head injuries. By the way, we were on a FLAT dirt road, and when the police arrived, they couldn't understand how in the heck he managed to roll a truck on a flat fire road. He walked away without a scratch. Needless to say, I no longer talk to him, and the best part was he came out of the closet a few weeks later; that pretty much sealed the deal. ![]() |

While we are on this topic, take a look at this video.
I don't think their is a 17 year-old kid driving this vehicle. I would like to say that maybe the driver would be in their late 20's to early 30's. |

Yes this is a sad topic and RIP to the passengers but I mean, you have to know your limits while your in the "zone" we all have subarus, of course were gonna "get on it" but all seriousness, weather conditions werent safe, the car was packed out, nobody had on seatbelts, driver didn't have a lisence, it was a freak accident just waiting to happen, it's sad 4 passengers lost their lives because their friend wanted to be ken block for a night, but also the parents should have kept the keys. We were all young and hey I'm 18 and bought my Wrx when I was 17 all by myself and let my friend drive in April 2012 and lost control into a gate going like 100mph, its not a game, it takes one little thing to ruin it all, like other people on the thread said its a powerful car and you have to know when your limits are

Life is full of "would have, should have, could have... etc." Moments before the incident, I doubt anyone in the vehicle knew the consequences. Likely, the boy had driven that section before and didn't expect what happened to have happened. That's why accidents are accidents. When I look at my motorcycle accident in 2009, there were many things I could have done in retrospect. Those things didn't happen, and half the c-fiber nerves in my leg are dead because of it. I'm actually glad things happened the way they did. Perhaps if I avoided that accident, I could have gotten into a much worse one later. Also, things could have been much worse, and I may not have walked away. There's no point in wasting time thinking about the "would have, should have, could have"s. Sure, in your mind, you would have done things differently. Regardless of all your great wisdom and what you could have done if you were there, you weren't there and four people are dead. Let this go and hope the families can find peace sooner than later. |

How many here had thier cars up to 100+ mph while still on a learners permit? Raise your hands.
*crickets* Stop making excuses for this driver with phrases like "that's why accidents are accidents". This isn't an accident, it's vehicular manslaughter. --kC |

You make a post asking a rhetorical question and say you didn't hear an answer in the same post?
Genius. Nobody here is defending the driver. Not a single damn person, other than some people talking about hind sight and what could have been done differently. This is the second time in this thread you have made an outrageous assumption based on silly logic. |

noun 1. an undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally and usually results in harm, injury, damage, or loss; casualty; mishap: automobile accidents. http://articles.latimes.com/1996-10-..._crash-victims In 1996, two of my classmates died in a similar "accident" Homecoming night. I'm still in touch with the driver here and there since we have mutual friends. He did go to juvenile hall for some time after, but having to live what he did for the rest of his life is a burden that weighs on him to this day. I will be surprised if Beer doesn't end up behind bars for a while, but he's gonna have to live with a lot more than that. |

These immature parents simply provided a weapon to their son. Actually that kid would have been probably alive if he had been given a real weapon.
To all these kids on nasioc that got "financial help" in buying their dream car (i.e. students with brand new WRX), you should turn to your parents and ask them why they want you dead. You know all too well you'll be driving your dream car beyond your talent and car's limit once in a while. Nothing wrong's with you, it's called youth and testosterone. This last one rises up especially when driving a sport car. And your parents are the only one to blame. |
