Supposedly autoweek caught a glimpse of the next WRX mule. It looks similar to a BRZ mule to me but who knows. The article is only a few days old so I dont think this has been posted anywhere.(nevermind, it has been posted before by a2cpc)

http://www.autoweek.com/article/2012...NEWS/121009919

Now that I look at that pic closely its just the same old BRZ mule. Its the same that has been spotted by several people on here. Weather it is a BRZ STI mule or next WRX, its a good sign that subaru has something up their sleeve.

Actually, our resident senior citizen a2cpc posted it in this thread in post # 727. But who's keeping track?

Hmm. Probably already said also, but there is NO telling what that thing is testing. I think Autoweek is just trying to scoop things.

That prototype still has the front wheels in the same position they were when it was(or should I say still is) a BRZ test platform. They can't fit their current AWD drivetrain on that platform as it sits since the front wheels are to far forward in the engine bay to allow for a driveshaft. Look at the distance between the front wheel and the leading edge of the door, that space is about half as big on an AWD Subaru.

No idea what they're testing but I'd be willing to bet its not the new WRX.

I am pretty sure that is the same car as in the videos a couple years ago, at least it has the same license plate, Michigan 005m030. I have found other mules with California and European plates. Told you...to much free time.

I'm throwing my gat in with the WRX being a derivative of the BRZ platform. Here's my logic:

BRZ wheelbase/ floorpan roughly same dimensions as Fiesta, a WRC contender.

I compared Fiesta dimensions with my 00 GC sedan using Edmund.com and my service manuals as sources. GC was wider and lower, but all other dimensions were very close.

That means hypothetically a GC sized B segment hatch/sedan can be derived from BRZ platform with structure forward of firewall modified for AWD.

Subaru does not have a USDM B segment car. Using thuds approach would allow them to fill two niches if they also came out with a lower powered base model - practical performance and economic Fiesta fighter.

Just my thoughts. YMMV. :-)

I think they have a B Sement car, that they just don't sell in the states. But I am on the same page as you.

What about the Focus? That was Subaru's competitor in WRC. Are they not rallying that anymore or you're thinking Subaru will downsize to race?

I think Ford did go to the Fiesta recently year for its WRC entry in order to be competitive, So Subaru wanted to reenter the WRC then a smaller B segment car would make sense. Seems that I have heard a few quotes about re-entering auto racing, but I am not sure I ever heard them say they specifically say WRC.

Does Subaru have a 1.6 turbo motor for WRC?

The Fiesta RS WRC is the current rally car for Ford. Has been for a couple of years now. Focus got too big for the series when the rules changed to smaller engine displacement and lower vehicle minimum weights. Same as what happened to Impreza, except Subaru had no smaller car to replace it. Ford did.

Subaru does have an FB16 engine. As far as I know it's NA, but a homologated turbo variant should not be that difficult.

I'm thinking JDM new WRX and STi will get a 1.6 DIT and USDM will get 2.0 DIT similar to the half liter difference in the current gen EJ series engines still in use in both markets.

Pure conjecture and rumor mongering on my part, but hey, that's what we do best in the absence of hard news, right?

Not sure if the rules changed but the last time I saw it; there's a certain specification that all transmissions must meet and these's transmissions can only mate with inline 4's, so I think by default boxers are excluded. Someone can correct me on this for sure, because I'm not the most knowledgable when it comes to FIA regulations.

The only B segment cars for Subaru are rebadged Daihatsu. That however has stopped. They need a BRZ based car.

The current WRC rules only allow for a transmission used that mates to transverse engines. So Subaru had to leave WRC, not R4 of course.

That being said, WRC has changed their rules every year (NA S2000 and turbo kit now). So if a big company like Subaru said we will come back if you expand the transmission options to an longitudinal layout also I am sure it will happen.

The new Subaru 1.6T exists but currently has no home besides the hybrid concept cars. It is waiting for the STI Spec C (homologated jdm car for WRC), IMHO.

I'm trying to envision a $30,000 B segment/hatchback on a dealer lot and I can not. I begin to think of something BRZ-like and then realize it already exists. If they do end up making a 300hp training shoe car and call it the WRX, it will never come to the US.
