You just need one tire. General rule of thumb is if you have 7/32 left on the tire you can get away with having one put on. Anything below that is a real grey area. If the dealer says you have 8/32 grab one and call it a day. Btw I work at a subaru dealership, I'm not talking out of my ass.

Buy a full set of take offs. I lucked out and got a used set here with 50 miles for half of retail.

No railroad tracks, it was the driver side rear tire so no front end damage.
