Another thing to mention is that an STI will hold its value than a modded WRX. Most people won't pay the extra 8k in mods you put into a WRX to make it an STI clone. That is my opinion.

This is a good point - if you really want an STI you should just save up your money and get one or buy a used one for less.

These threads can really be summed up by the following equation:

More track/autoX = STI
More DD or no track = WRX

If your modding either one can work all depends on you goals. I think the problem we have is that no one really has any realistic goals.

Sure we want the fastest and best handling car, but most people who go out and spend the cash to get there, end up selling their car because it sucks to DD. So before you buy you really need to know your goals.

In May 2003 when I bought my auto WRX wagon, I really wanted that WRB 04 STI. But my wife was pregnant and I do alot of outdoor stuff (biking, fishing, etc). I needed a car that my wife could drive safely and one that I could put bikes on and boats on top and fit a stroller in the back. The wagon was perfect, best purchase ever. Sure I still want an STI, but it was not as versatile and was about 6K more at the time. Even with 10 years of mods I spent less than 6K on my car so the WRX was right for me.

Yes.....I did mean 2001. Derp. I bought a BRP 4 door 2001 2.5RS in the fall of 2000, so based my story partly on a true story.

newb newb newb, go to the wheels/tires section and read!!! plenty of stickies addressing this!

OP, I had struggled with this scenario when I bought my WRX as well. And after some research, yes you can do it for not a ton of money. BUT that means you have a nice shop, all the tools, and the know how to do all the work yourself. It ALSO means you have another car to DD because this project will take you months and months to complete. This also means that everything goes smoothly, no broken parts, no missing hardware, no hang ups of any kind. So i've decided to keep and mod my WRX because in the end I don't care about resale value (i'll be buried in this car) so I can make it exactly what I want anyway.
