Default Help with modifying my subie

Hi guys I'm brand new to the whole forum thing and was reading the whole thing about making 400whp. That is my goal and I know I have alot to do but right now my subie is 6 months old and I work on turn arounds and usually buy something every month or so. So far I have nameless performance axle back, invidia cattless dp, k&n short ram intake, grimmspeed gaskets and heat shield and a getting a pro tune within the next couple days. I wants to upgrade suspension, brakes and stiffen it up a bit then more with the engine. Any ideas? Thanks

you'll need a lot more than that for 400whp. And is that 400whp on a mustang or dyno jet? Completely different.

Truthfully i have pistons and im at 400whp mustang. Im selling my turbo for a smaller one and going back down to 300-350. 400whp is fun but the thought of $8k blowing up will make you rethink the 400. It can be done safely, but its not worth the risk.

Great write up! Just picked up a 08 WRX just over a week ago. Only going for light mods so maybe hit just over 300whp in the end but that won't be till next summer.

Nicely written! I have zero experience with driving high hp cars, but a friend (old drag racing guy) has a 500whp mustang that he lets me ride in sometimes. WOT on that car scares the s*** out of me, and he's a very good driver, with years and years of experience in big, powerful muscle cars. I couldn't imagine that much power with AWD and me driving! I'd wrap it around a tree (if I was lucky), plain and simple.

Now that Cobb has Speed Density available for the 16bit ECU (02-05 WRX) now, and those model year cars have plummeted in price on the retail market there might be a fairly large upsurge in younger chaps (and ladies) able to get into the scoobies that were once out of their pocket book (moreover their parent's) range.

However, after researching a 400whp car in that particular genre (02-05); it is definitely a returnless investment. Even more so if it's wrapped around a tree.

I hope that veteran scoobie owners are point the newbs in the right direction instead of chastising them for having "rice" cars, and then pointing out the constructive advice on what it is to have a car that can be loads of fun, but takes tons more respect.

After 327awhp on my bugeye, and now eyeballing Speed Density w/Cobb... a Full Race rotated kit isn't far off from me. But I've also had various experience levels with this car from Stock to "stage 2ish" to my full hybrid built motor, 6spd swapped out monster it is now and all the Blouch goodness with it.

Be careful out there, really think about what it takes and what you need vs. what you want.

Good Luck!!

Hate to break it to you, but you won't hit 300whp with your stock turbo. It's the TD04 and is just way to small. I don't know if you consider a turbo a "light upgrade", but that is what's required to hit 300whp, safely.

I've got a 400whp daily driver... Love it. Selling it for something more practical for me. I'm losing a LOT of money selling it. It took me a lot of money to get it to this point, and I'm going to get peanuts for it in comparison.

(anyone interested let me know! )

biggest mistake everyone makes is trying to push 22-25 psi out of the turbo, but when you build a strong motor you dont have to push that much boost to make up the power and of course with more boost the higher chances of blowing stuff lol

The problem is the new generation of tuners is blowing smoke up everyone's ass telling them "there you go, you have 300whp"

Most of these new generation of tuners, to be blunt, suck. This is why blown motors are SO much more common than they were 8-9 years ago.

Great thread, I have an 05 sti "stage 2"...
Headers, up pipe, 3" invidia dp to a 3" full greddy exhaust, all cat-less. Aps intake, cobb ap "91 oct stage 2 tune"
Super street full tien suspension set up.
And i actually wouldnt mind a little more ponies....I bought the car because I have owned sport motorcycles for the past few years, love speed and acceleration even more. So i am not a novice to it.
My question is if anyone cares to share some honest info on how to get more power...or if this IS a good start?? Oh, and the big kicker is that my car has 137,xxx miles o_O .....def pushing this thing.

First step is to pull the motor and have it or build it yourself if you have the skills with forged internals. The stock pistons with that many miles I would not trust. Most tuners, if they're worth a damn, will put a conservative tune on there to save your motor with that many miles if and when the day comes you REALLY wanna see them ponies let loose.

And even before that set up a plan or goals.

A) what will the car's MAIN use be for? Dedicated track use? Daily driver with spirited and OCCASIONAL Auto-X and/or Strip? Dedicated daily driver? Rally Cross? etc...
B) What is you budget? are you single? Married? kids? apartment? house w/garage? Town home? this all plays into how much you can spend to have a mechanic/tuner shop install stuff or Do-It-Yourself. Many Landlords and or property management companies do not allow car "repairs" on their land.
C) Take a HDPC (High Speed Driving Course)...learn the car, when you get into a situation at full boost you can safely recover it and minimize loss of life and property damage.

Second, and I don't mean to be condescending, but ask a tuner in your area. He or she will be able to tailor a plan that fits what you want. And please get a horsepower/torque number out of your head. Most people end up chasing every little part to squeeze every ounce of power out of motor and can lead to other issues. That isn't to say that is you at all, but beware of that.

Other than that good luck...

You clearly have no idea what your talking about. Try and keep the misinformation out of this thread and read up some more.

A "built" engine (aka forged internals) has nothing to do with making power. It can handle higher power (in theory) without breaking. That's it.

A td04 will never hit 25psi. It will hit 21-22psi max, for about 200rpms before it drops again.

Do you understand the concept of higher boost? Why it's an issue? Upping the boost will eventually cause the turbo to be out of it's efficiency range, therefore causing increased heat, and eventually causing detonation. An engine, built or not, can only handle so detonation before a catastrophic failure occurs (aka, engine goes "boom").

What one 2.0L 16ecu (02-05 WRX) needs to hit 4XX whp on a MUSTANG dyno:

So this is an answer to the question...just one of many I am sure because teeing off into this and coupled with a couple other FAQ's that need to be read in order to work for someone else is a must. I don't have dyno numbers until I went to a full build, just because I found it a waste to dyno a car with such mild upgrades, and open-source was going to fit more MY kind of driving. Again this is different for everyone.

I staged my progress into a 4xx whp build, just simply because after transferring from the American Muscle realm into subies, is a whole different ball game. Aside from basic engine functionality, the two worlds are so different that the "which is better?" argument is invalid in my eyes.

First was just a cat-less exhaust, panel filter, "canned" tune, and upgraded fuel pump (a MUST for anyone looking to modify their whip).

Second was out of necessity rather than need. And ended up being cheaper for me. A relative had run my WRX with no oil in it for quite some time. And upon checking it, after getting it back I promptly filled it. Quite annoyed at that. Nevertheless, the damage was done and the engine seized at the worst time on my way to work. Time for 2.5L build!!
So it was a OEM spec. EJ257 shortblock with matched heads (ported to match). I trashed the TD04 and put on a VF22, DW650cc injectors, STi TMIC, open exhaust, and an open source road tune (STi Mikey FTW!).

Third was a more radical upgrade. Blouch 1.5XT-R, DW850cc inj., FMS TMIC, JDM Ver. 6 TGVs (deleted), KSTech 73mm intake, 3" Agency Power hard inlet, Ver. 8 JDM STi 6spd full swap w/brembos and R180 rear end, Invidia Q300, Megan catless downpipe, Invidia uppipe. Dyno'ed at EFI logics 327hp/310tq -as you can see these upgrades are a pretty penny as Unabomber points out on his FAQ for a Mustang dyno, and STILL not hitting 400hp as one might on a dynapack. HEED that warning kids! I was limited by the TMIC, and stock MAF maxed @ 4.75v. The 16bit ECU is becoming a bit of a dinosaur, and tuners more and more are rolling their eyes at having to deal with it.

Up next and still in the planning stages are: Kelford cams 272/272 (high lift/high duration), 1mm oversized (37mm/33mm)Supertech valves (standard length), FMIC, EWG, speed density from Cobb, and possibly a bigger turbo. All told this will cost upwards around $4-5k for parts, labor, and tuning. This will net me 4xxhp more than likely. If not, then full twin-scroll rotated and I can add another $4k to that.

Set a goal and be willing to fork out the $$! And if you're married, don't count on staying married for long LOL!

My very first mods will most likely be Intake/Exhaust/Tune. Any idea how much of a difference I'll notice over stock? I don't imagine it'll blow my skirt up but I hope it creates an even better sound and allows it to pull a little harder in all areas of the RPM range.

Fill out your profile. We have no idea how it will affect your car since we don't know what your car is.

Did you do forged pistons when you rebuilt it? If not, I gotta ask why.
