Hey guys, I have an '03 impreza outback sport 5spd, I learned how to drive standard on this car and have driven it about 8k and it has 203,000. When the car is in neutral and foot off the clutch I hear a ticking noise then i push it in and its gone... I thought maybe TO bearing so I replaced it with an OEM bearing, one of the clips was slightly bent so I bent it back into place and reinstalled the engine. Noise persists.... It is most noticeable between 2-3,000 rpm and is very loud in every gear. Is it possible that I broke something in the clutch? And yes it has the oem exedy clutch kit. I would really like to get this problem fixed before it snows... no garage access for this guy

Can you possibly get some video/audio of the sound? That may help you get some answers.

idk if i can get video/sound my phone sucks and dont have a cam... Pilot bearing was replaced I believe, everything seems to work fine but I know that noise is not good! Once in a while while driving the noise isnt there at all... Maybe the flywheel is in need of replacing??

Finally got some audio! When I push the clutch in the rattle goes away. Tried getting audio of driving it but you cant hear it well enough on the cam inside the car and nothing but wind outside... Its getting worse and I dont want to buy a beater for the winter I love my Suby! Especially in the snow!! |

Can you put your fingers on the clutch fork and "feel" the problem?
I hear something nasty but half of it could simply be normal Subaru noise... Has the car ever had the timing belt and water pump done? |

Timing belt was done not very long ago. This cant be a normal subaru noise. Ive been around many of them and this is the first ive heard something like this... You can feel it in the shifter, and when you put your hand on the back of the engine, and like i said it goes away when i push the clutch in. Drives smooth, shifts just fine. It sounds like a loose heatshield when driving it. Cant really hear it when declerating though

I put the clutch in about 12k ago though. Never really driven it hard. Could it possibly be the input shaft bearing? And I;m not 100% that the pilot bearing was replaced... I would think it was but not certain. Today I was coasting and put it into different gears keeping the clutch in and I could hear like a whispering noise only when it was in the gears, not neutral. Why would it make a rattling noise when accelerating and not decel??

I've been following this thread for a little bit since I seem to have devoloped a similar sound...Brought it to my tuner and he is sure its the input shaft bearing in my case....kinda just sounds like a "loud" transmission when not touching petals...ya no good for customer...
