From Cars101.com

Quote:
10/25 Factory Orders- Subaru fesses up, announces that ordered cars are going to take longer and longer to arrive.
With Subaru riding a wave of popularity and cars selling quickly, there's been a shortage of cars available on lots for a while now. This is especially true of the Japanese built Impreza, Crosstrek, BRZ and WRX/STI. This is a good/bad problem. The good part is Subarus are selling. Once known as a mostly functional car for skiers, hippies, campers and dog lovers etc in the northeast, northwest, rocky mountains and other frosty, wet areas, and widely unknown everyplace else, Subarus are now the It Car and selling everywhere. Even where it's warm and dry all year round.
As a result of the reduced inventory on lots, more and more people are either putting deposits down on already scheduled incoming cars, or are factory ordering if what they want isn't on the horizon.
This even further reduces the number of cars available on lots because more arrivals are pre-sold and spoken for. And with Subaru trying to expand into every market, they now have a whopping total of 1,209 possible model, trim and color combinations and that doesn't even include individual options.
As a result of the increase in orders, the ETA (estimated time of arrival) of factory ordered cars is getting pushed back. This is the bad part. Its like your favorite neighborhood restaurant getting a glowing review, all of a sudden it's 'discovered' (like it hasn't been there for years and years), and there's a line to get in on weekends. Then reservations are recommended, then required, then its 4 weeks out to get in and so on. Meet Subaru, the little car company showing everyone how to make consumers fall in love with a car.
Previously orders usually took 6-10 weeks. Now Subaru has announced a longer wait time for orders. These ETAs are not fixed. They're are a guide as to how long the wait could be. Of course some cars will arrive sooner and others later but it can take months for a car just to be matched to the order and a future ETA released.
how can Subaru possibly have 1,209 models?
Impreza- there are 189 possible Impreza model, trim and color combinations.
Crosstrek- there are 48 possible Crosstrek model, trim and color combinations
WRX/STI- there are 96 possible WRX and STI model, trim and color combinations
Forester- there are 136 possible Forester model, trim and color combinations
Outback- there are 448 possible Outback model, trim and color combinations, including PZEVs
Legacy- there are 240 possible Legacy model, trim and color combinations, including PZEVs
Tribeca- there are 24 possible Tribeca model, trim and color combinations
BRZ- here are 28 possible BRZ model, trim and color combinations

> according to Subaru if you order a
Impreza, the ETA will be around 4 months starting with the next full month after you order.
Crosstrek, the ETA will be around 4 months starting with the next full month after you order.
WRX/STI, the ETA will be around 4 months starting with the next full month after you order.
Forester, the ETA will be around - oops.. no orders accepted. The redesigned 2014 is expected late winter/spring.
Outback, the ETA will be around 3 months starting with the next full month after you order.
Legacy, the ETA will be around 3 months starting with the next full month after you order.
Tribeca, the ETA will be around 3 months starting with the next full month after you order (is anyone ordering a Tribeca).
BRZ, due to the way BRZs are allocated, the ETA is estimated to be 4-7 months out, but Subaru will back-fill as model and color is available. There's no ETA until shortly before the car arrives.

I'm really debating between the 2013 WRX STI or 2013 Lancer Evo GSR :'(. Both are very similar in many ways and also different! I don't know.

Ouch four months from after the full month of order for a WRX. Soooo with that thinking ordered on 9/28 won't take delivery until Feb or March. Oh well just have to hope for the best.

Can someone enlighten me. Are VINs given when the car rolls out of the factory in Japan or are they given when in route on the ship and SOA assigns that car to a placed order. Ordered a SWP base sedan on 8/29 with no VIN and ETA of december. Could my car be on the ship scheduled to port mid november and they just haven't assigned a VIN yet. I'm trying to be patient, but it is very hard.

SoA seems to assign VIN's sometime between factory and arrival at port. SDC does not assign VIN's until its offloaded from the ship.

Put a deposit down an incoming WRX. Its the Base Hatch (DXN) in WRB with Armrest ext, cargo tray, bumper cover, wheel locks, floor mats, shock sensor, Auto dim mirror. Talked them down from 27.3 to 25.8. Pick up on 11/16!!! I've wanted a wrx since 2004.

Whats the consensus on the Side Moldings- Worth it? Actually provide protection? I live in an apt.

Hmm, reading all this makes me wonder. The WRX Limited I got was sitting at the dealer for at least 2 weeks. Must of been lucky?

So does anyone know for sure that you only get a VIN once your car arrives at port? I've heard once it's at port, once it's on the boat, and once it's done at the factory. Just curious.

Does anyone know at what point a car shows up on the website with an "In transit" tag? I previously thought that was once it was in the states. But now I'm thinking that's once it leaves the factory?

When it's done at the factory, a VIN exists. When you get it could be any time from that point forward. Not very helpful I know.

If it's a Sold Order, it will not show up on the dealers website... even when In Transit. Likewise if someone wants to put a deposit down to claim an incoming "In Transit" dealer allocation, what should happen is that listing gets pulled off their site.

Yeah I know the car has the VIN stamped into the car. I'm just trying to figure out when SOA releases it to the dealer. I emailed SOA, so I'll post up what they tell me.

VON is vehicle order number. Should have gotten the day the order was placed. I would call your dealer.

Yeah I've never heard that (6-8 days). I instantly had a VON the second the order was submitted.

My salesperson placed the order with me on the phone. Had my VON instantly.

What kind of took me off guard was that she said she could order an orange STi, even she was confused - anyone else hear of this?

Just wanted to update anyone that might be interested. Don't waste your money on either the kicker sub or any upgraded head unit from Subaru. I bought the nav and the kicker sub. My old wrx had the factory head unit, factory speakers and factory passenger seat sub and I LOVED HOW IT SOUNDED. The new car is terrible. I am so disappointed at how the system sounds I'm speechless.

Orange is a special edition color only in Austraila.
