Out of curiosity, when does it knock? When did it start, how long has it been doing it and is it continuous?

Fill out your profile so we know where you live, instead of reading through the sentences.
You have a brand new car, use that brand new WARRANTY wisely. And Subaru's are a loud car, are you sure it's not the common sound? |

it has been ongoing since for a week, it started quietly and the sound is much pronounced.when the car is under 1k rpm, you don't hear it. once the engine is revved up it starts.
i am taking it to the dealer, but i want to go there with some understanding of what might be the issue. profile will be updated, i just joined this forum..thanks for any advice |

How do you know it's knock? Are you familiar with what knock sounds like? Do you have logs?
Either way, dealership will take care of you. I'm curious as well... seems strange for a brand new WRX to be knocking straight out of the factory. |

FYI this is what rod knock sounds like (starting at 0:16): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81UQB3RomMM
If this is it I'd stop driving it immediately and get it to a dealer. |

Update. Dealer wants to do a tear down, which is not something I am thrilled about .I have called SOA and let them know that I want a new car. Waiting to hear back from SOA on Monday. I feel a new car that needs an engine taken apart and rebuilt is now compromised. Total miles 1074.

Wow.
I agree. Demand a new car at 1000miles. Not a rebuilt motor. |

I am worried that this is going to be drawn out affair. Has anyone dealt with something like this?

They'll tear it down which should happen quickly. Then they'll almost likely put in a new shortblock which is already assembled. I highly doubt they'd try and rebuild. It's not worth it. The shortblock swap really doesn't take long either. Subaru had to do LOTS of shortblock swaps back in 2009 as part of a recall because of a bearing issue in the WRXs. Many were failing within 5K miles.
Unfortunately, you're not going to be getting a new car. It's not a lemon by definition. |

I had the following experience: Turbo failed in ex-wifes '05 Legacy GT due to clogged banjo bolt oil screen. Turbo fins broke and sent metal through entire motor. Dealership tried to say it was due to lack of maintenance because I didn't have all my oil/filter receipts and a journal of oil changes with mileage. They were going to charge me ~$9500 to replace the entire motor and turbo, car was 700 miles out of warranty and extended warranty didn't cover it. I, of course, wasn't having any part of that. Did some research and found Subaru service memos saying this was occurring in cars that had had ALL their maintenance done by dealerships. Brought that paperwork in to the dealership, they still declined to cover it. So, I paid them the down payment they required to start the work but told them my attorney would be contacting them. Got a call 2 days later, Subaru decided to do the repair under "good faith". I just had to sign some paperwork saying this wasn't due to a faulty design but something specific with our car. All this took around 4 weeks. The first 10 days were spent in limbo while I did my research and wouldn't agree to paying them to work on the car. Then it seemed to go pretty quickly. Your issue is much more straight forward and car is brand new. You aren't getting a new car, but will get a new short block at a minimum. Last edited by 575rider; 11-03-2012 at 07:20 PM. |

Sometimes it's an absolute nightmare dealing with dealers in these situations, but if a LL attorney takes your case you won't have to deal with it. |

Thanks for the updates on this, kfgates. A lot of us are very interested to see how smoothly, or not, things go. Sounds like SOA is reviewing your case and should have an answer as to how it plans to proceed shortly. Hopefully they do you right.
