A manual Forester XT hasn't been available stateside since 2008. At least it's getting something new, it's only had the 4 speed auto since then.

Regarless of stats, agreed it's progressing too far towards a rav4/escape/other lovechild instead of being a cool, SMALL, sporty miniSUV thing.

no turbo + manual is another nail in the sporty coffin too. I'd be interested to see how the CVT gear mimicking works, that actually sounds like a pretty cool idea.

Also, yes, the FR-S/GT-86/BRZ are considered light. For their size and tech and price, they're light. I refuse to pay the price of the Lotus and I do not like the looks of the Miata. I'm definitely not alone on this, which is why people are enjoying these cars. If they were considered heavy things would be different. You can't compare them to your wagon or any other old Subaru. New Subaru vehicles come with an airbag for the passenger's knees.... KNEES, Caleb! There's so much extra bracing and safety added to these vehicles that, yes, 2700lbs is considered light by today's standards.

Also, the current WRX/STI are considered light for having AWD, turbocharging and four doors. Go do some comparisons against the competition, not the cars of yesteryear. You'll see what I'm talking about.

I don't know if people ever complained about the Forester's weight, but I wouldn't doubt they made it lighter since it's based on the current Impreza and aiming to have better MPG. Same with next WRX/STI. People want more performance, but better MPG. They WILL be lighter. Will they be as light as a 90's Legacy wagon? Most likely not anymore, but that's not a fair comparison.

Trust me. I'm with you on making these vehicles significantly lighter, but they're also making them more powerful to help offset the weight increase.
Lol you arent paying attention I just told you the curb weight of 2012. Sorry if i didnt say 3,378lbs. Also the reason they are heavy isn't because of extra bracing or air bags its because they are twice the size. As I said I'm fine with having a WRX like it is but they need to step it up with the STi. The WRX has the same 1/4 mile as the STi. That's sad. There is no substitute for weight. Yeah it might keep it the same in a straight but in a turn it will show. Oh and the STi still has the same 305hp it started with.

Not gonna argue. Everyone can have their own opinion I'm just saying mine.

He's saying the all new 2012 Impreza is lighter than the old one(dropped about 160 lbs). The 2012/2013 STI is still based on the old Impreza chassis. So the all new WRX/STI due out in a year or so should be lighter.

Granny, what you want is the "body in white" racecar STi. But they don't make that. They used to do that with the SPEC C in other markets, stripped down to the bare bones, plain white, but had upgraded components. But I haven't heard of that in a while. Since most race teams strip out all the interior anyway, why not just offer it like that from the factory? I'm guessing that it's not a popular high volume sales item.

EDIT: I guess the body in white is just the chassis and body, no drivetrain.

2011 = sedan 2.5i manual transmission - 3,075lbs

2012 = sedan 2.0i manual transmission - 2,911lbs

Looks like it lost weight to me.

I'm not trying to argue, either. I don't argue, I discuss, learn and inform.

Also, even if the WRX can "beat" the STI in a straight line, the WRX lags behind on extended track days compared to the STI. Getting a WRX just to drag race it is missing the point anyways, so not sure why that was brought up.

2004 STi base sedan manual - 3,263lbs
2012 STi base sedan manual - 3,384lbs

Not saying they need to strip out the car. Just need to loose some unneeded weight and keep it in the WRX.

Got it. Yeah, if we're talking just WRX/STI over the course of time, then yeah. My bad for trying to stick with future-weight expectations. Yes, the lack of change in the newer STI versus the older STI is what partially swayed me towards just getting the 2011 WRX. Having already owned a 2005 STI, I realized getting a 2011 STI would pretty much be more of the same.

I think the 2014+ STI will be exciting, though! The top execs are saying that enthusiasts will be pleased.

Side note: Even with inflation, the price of the base STI has stayed in line with the older STI pricing, which isn't bad. I think maybe $500-$600 more overall for a new-gen STI.

Cant wait to see the 2014 STi! Hoping for smaller, lighter, and more power! Wish the same for the xt and the lgt. I love the forester xt just wish they made it a little smaller and lighter. Favorite year hands down is the 04 xt. Granny likes those fog lights

Anything leaked or hinted toward with the "new" car? I haven't been hanging out in News & Rumors lately.

I would love to own a 2004 XT. I liked my 2008, but I felt like I could get away with more JDM stuff if I had the 2004/2005.

All they've shown is a chopped up 2012 Impreza sedan that had 2011+ WRX wheels, a 6-speed manual, a WRX hood scoop and I believe a diffuser. It was pretty fugly and seemed kind of pointless unless they were testing how it handled in the heat (was spotted in the desert, basically). 6-speed manual is a good thing, though. People have been crying for one since forever. After owning one for two years I did find myself wishing I had an extra cruising gear, otherwise I was cool with the power delivery of the 5-speed. I just wished it was less brittle and smoother.

Until Subaru says otherwise, people are assuming that they're just ducting. Kind of like the pre-2010 Mazdaspeed 3 that didn't have hood scoops (or any other such car that you can think of, I guess).

I like hood scoops because they scream, "I mean business!" It's what makes bro trucks and Honda ricers think twice about trying to do a fly-by on you (twice the thoughtfulness to consider how committed they are to the action they are or aren't about to take upon you).

I like how clean it looks without the hood scoop, which must be what Subaru is going for.

^^ I kinda like that. It doesn't even look like a rip off of another company this time.

Is that a mirror that lets you see where the front tire is? I'm a big fan of oil filters being on top.

Some speculate that it's something like this:

I got SOA Blog to state that they love the puddle lights as much as I do, yet they're not standard. Bottom line price dictates what becomes standard.

Examples:

2012 Impreza Base model did not come with Bluetooth althought every other trim did, but 2013 Base model does come with Bluetooth. You would think from the get-go it would've been easier to just manufacturer ALL of the Impezas to have Bluetooth, right? Also Base Impreza does not get paint-matched side mirrors. Why? Bean counters figured that NOT added this would keep the new Impreza at a desirable price.

USDM BRZ doesn't come with $200 plastic under panels and $100 exhaust tips like the EDM and JDM BRZ do. Would it REALLY have killed them to just include them?

We're assuming that 2014 Forester will feature EyeSight, so that side-mirror system is most likely integrated somehow.

Give it a scoop (if I own a 'fast' wagon, I want everyone else to know its 'fast'), and a proper 6 speed manual gearbox and I would trade my N/A in for it in a heartbeat.
