Higher octane fuel is, in short, just more resistant to knock. Having great knock resistance allows for more advanced timing, creating more power. That's the best I can explain without writing an entire chapter of text. Subaru's EMS will advance timing, if only a little, to accommodate higher octane fuel. Typically the difference is negligible at best, unless you get tuned for the higher octane.

Even if to gain .5hp.

I'd get 91 oct just to get 0% ethanol if I had some extra money to waste.

And yeah thanks, I understand pretty well how the timing works, just wasn't sure if Subaru had implemented anything that could adjust for slightly higher than normal octane.

Octane does not in and of itself guarantee better performance and or mileage. Ethanol increases the octane rating; however, decreases both performance and mileage - also cost in many areas.

Actually ethanol only decreases performance in a car that wasn't made to handle it. Ex: Koenigsegg CCXR Edition, something like 810rwhp on regular pump 93 octane. I believe more than 1100HP on E85. (not sure of the exact numbers, but it's significant, at least 150HP increase)

i'm pretty sure he was referring to the comparison of pure gas and gas + ethanol with the same octane rating.

ethanol in itself produces les power per unit volume than gas at the same octane. E85 has a very high octane rating that can allow you run very advance timing or a lot more boost. you could do the same with pure race gas at 110 octane but the the cost of race gas was something like $7.50 a gallon 5 years ago. i have no idea what it is now.

yea, and a whole lot of thing. we would need upgraded fuel pump, fuel lines and fuel injectors.

On the other hand, I can get my car tuned to run on a higher octane? 87 vs 89; however, I don't really see the point on an econobox.

i mean the gain from 87to 89 is minimal, why not 93? but you are right why do it anyways? lol

Because whatever performance and mileage gains will be offset by the price of the tune (which is not even available) and the higher octane gas. Screw that I work in an environmental analytical lab, my car is going to run on a mix of isopropanol, methanol, and ethanol!

lol good luck, have fun. i wonder what subaru is going to say when your engine blows. i mean can you imagine the mechanic's face wondering why the engine blew and then sniffs the air, "is that alcohol?" then they have to prove you didnt use gasoline. man wonder if subaru would actually go through that much trouble.

Shhh...it's our little secret.

If it was a major warranty claim for an issue as severe as this, Subaru would go through all that trouble to refuse your warranty claim.

One thing I have noticed is that when the CVT is taking forever to shift up (it's still shifting, just not in the traditional sense) if I push it over to low it goes right up to 6000 almost instantly.

I don't know what those sounds are from the transmission, but they're normal, it always made those sounds...
