The Scion FR-S was just named the Hottest Sport Compact at the 2012 SEMA Show, and Toyota Racing Development (TRD) is apparently looking to make this car a little hotter. According to Car and Driver, TRD is close to coming up with a supercharger to fit to the car's 2.0-liter flat-four engine in order to squeeze out a little more performance. Currently, the FR-S produces 200 horsepower, but there's no guessing how much a supercharger could improve this figure. With Subaru seemingly hard at work on a new turbo engine for the BRZ and even possibly a BRZ STI model, it is only logical for a force-fed FR-S to be in the works as well. Surprisingly, though, the report says that supercharger would be unique to the FR-S, but since the Scion and Subaru BRZ are mechanically identical, it isn't clear how this would be accomplished. TRD already offers plenty of upgrades for the FR-S such as exhaust, brake and suspension kits, and it offers a handful of superchargers for other models including the 5.7-liter V8 used in the Toyota Tundra and the 4.0-liter V6 used in the Tacoma.

Sounds like a packageing nightmare, particularly if intercooled

It's kind of crazy how all the aftermarket is jumping all over a car sold in such small numbers. Still can't get a Cobb CBE for the STI sedan lol.

But Cobb is just slow. It took them forever and a day to release the AccessPort for the Evo VIII/IX (I think it came out either in early 2008, even though it was on their site for a really long time before that), then they discontinued it shortly afterward.

You'd be surprised. There are like 3 supercharger kits and like 5-6 turbo kits out for the car already. You can get away with installing one on the BRZ with a FMIC without even having to cut anything, setting the engine back further and low left a decent amount of room around the front of the engine bay.
The car being a Toyota/Scion has brought so many more vendors to the car than if it was a Subaru only model. One magazine just tested 11 different catback exhausts for the car, and that's probably 1/3 of the ones which are available. |

aschen...it's been done before.
In the pre WRX era, S/C kits were one of the many options. ![]() |

I wonder if TRD USA is going to rebadge the Vortech SC, like they did with the Scion TC SC.

What are you talking about? Subaru never had a SC option for any of its newer gen model year 90+ vehicles. The picture you linked was the engine bay of the STX concept that turned into the Baja. That concept also had a 600 watt radio, low range, a full pass through back, and a ton of other concept type stuff that never made it to production. That SC setup was never more than a one off.

It's supposed to be co-developed with Stout Racing who built the Wold Challenge car they are racing next year. That car will have the supercharger.

I'm saving now... I know it'll be a rip off but I have 100K warranty that this will still cover.

Product announcement is made, nasioc users ask when it'll be produced, Cobb replies back "very soon." This is Cobb Time. Cobb Time is usually measured in 12-18 month increments. |

I only know one company (Rimmer) that sold a supercharger for the Impreza, and the one person I know that bought one never got it to work properly.
And I was on a group buy for braided brake lines from Cobb for more than a year. I did get them, though! |

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that the rules would be the same as in other applications, like how the TRD supercharger only got a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty... and that's only if it were installed by a Toyota dealership.

Just FYI, Intercooling a S/C is actually pretty easy with a sandwich plate exchanger. Unlike the complexity of say a twin turbo set up, you just have the I/C mounted between the S/C and the lower intake. You can then either air or water cool it. You just need to have enough clearance, and with a water coolers system the plate can be pretty thin.

my packaging concerns were more about the hieght of putting a positive displacement unit on top of the engine. Admitedly I hadnt looked too closly at the engine compartment of a brz. It seems like it would be difficult in an impreza, but I guess the engine is much lower in the Brz.
That innovative kit looks really nice. Its cool they are getting into this sort of stuff as opposed to just wide bands and logging. The supercharger looks pretty small. Is that an eaton TVS unit? Anyways, aschen appologizes for his seemingly unfounded packaging concerns. |

The engine bay itself is pretty roomy, from what I remember when I saw one at a local FR-S unveiling.

They used an Eaton M90 installed upside-down. They put a discharge hat on the "top" of the supercharger and ran a pipe from that into an intercooler. Air returned through an elbow that went into the back of the lower intake manifold. The overall packaging was pretty small, which was good because that car had a low hood line. Air distribution was rather poor, though. |

If you combine the FR-S and BRZ sales, they have already sold over 10K cars and will probably sell 16-18K by the end of the year. I think that would far exceed STi sales numbers.

Yeah, the motor is low in the BRZ, and kinda far forward for RWD...I feel like Andre the Giant could have wrenched on that car. It's like a '73 Monte Carlo in there! |

There were 3 or 4 Supercharger kits for the platform at SEMA. Vortech, Innovative, IAG, and I thought I saw another one.
