Default iPad mini Install Idea

I've always wanted to stick an iPad in my WRX because I hated all the double din aftermarket radios. They are all slow and out dated compared to todays technology.

So, I just got an iPad mini the other day and it's the perfect size for what I want to do. The width fits perfectly with the stock bezel, but some trimming and modification will be needed to fit it hight wise.

I got the inspiration from this video:

What I want to do is what they did, create a magnetic holder for the mini. But I also want to have a single din radio hidden behind it. I also want to have it connected to a lighting port to it gets power and so the radio can use the cable to play the music so it frees up the bluetooth for my phone.

I've never done/created anything like this and I'm open to ideas/suggestions. And you're free to use this design and make your own, you just have to make me one

Rough idea I created in google sketch up.

If you can fit the stereo behind the iPad, that may be a good place to put it, but it may be more advantageous to put the stereo in the glove box in case you ever need to access the buttons on it for some reason. Making a magnetic holder shouldn't be too hard assuming you know how to work with fiberglass. If you don't, just watch some videos online and familiarize yourself with it, it's a pretty simple process. I'm sure this thread will help you out

You can always mount the single DIN receiver in the centre console as well, it's there if when you need it, but out of the way for everyday use. You can get bluetooth add ons from some aftermarket receiver manufacturers (Pioneer, Alpine, etc) that don't use the same port as the iPod audio.

One other thing to keep in mind is how many amps the headunit outputs because lets say your iPad draws 1 amp/hour, but the headunit only charges at 0.5 amp/hour, then your iPad is going to die (however, if you don't really go on long trips and you plan on making the iPad removable, you probably don't need to worry about this)

Subscribed I would love to do this and see how this turns out! the benefit of it being a ipad as long as they dont change the shape drastically it would be "easily" upgradable! And what about using one of those wireless cases with a charger in it?

The reason I'd like the radio directly behind the iPad is because I use the glove box and center console. All the controls I really need are on the steering wheel, but if I do need to access it it's really easy to pop off the iPad mini.

And I saw that build, neat idea but doesn't seem to clean in my opinion.

I think the iPad mini will charge off the radio usb.

Yeah, I hope they don't change the shape for the next generation...
Not sure I've ever seen those cases you're talking about.

Here's another image of the faceplate.

To make the iPad mini fit I'm going to have to cut part of the vents. I still what the vents to be functional so I was thinking taking a fin or two off the top horizontal fins and cutting the assembly back the depth of the front fins. The back vertical fins can stay as the iPad tray should not be that deep.

Here is the front of the plate and what I have to cut to make room The horizontal bar on the plate will cut out and moved down.

Here's a side view of the vent assembly and how it was going to notch it out.

Does anyone know here I can get the actual vent assembly part?
Some info that was on it:

why are you knotching down into the vents instead of moving the ipad up, and then reglass to get proper fitment? Going to be way less effort, better fitment, and going to look a million times better.

I'm going to have to go down anyways. If the bottom of the iPad mini lines up with the bottom on the radio part on the faceplate, it extends .5" past the top. Which sucks because it would have been a lot easier...

I'm late to the party, however, my input here is work from the top down, like the "regular" iPad bezel, rather than bottom UP... that way you don't mess with the vents..

All be told, making a simple slot for this to slide down into seems SUPER easy with this things size...

The thing is, the iPad mini would stick .5in above the faceplate if I did not touch the vents. It would be a lot easier if I go up, but I'll have to see how it would look/work if I added a bit to the top.

I'd rather it stick up a little, easier to simply slip it out of the dock...

Trust me, it'll work better, be easier to do and be cleaner overall...

Again, just look at how slick the iPad bezel is... it wouldn't suprise me if a "mini" bezel wasn't coming out soon...

Very cool! I like how the width of the iPad is perfect. Don't you love the Impreza bezel? It's perfectly suited for all these fun mods!

I'm working on a Nexus 7 install in mine, the height of the Nexus 7 fits perfectly in the bezel! I'll post a thread soon with some pictures.

Can't wait to see your install, how do you plan on doing it?

I found a video of someone that stuck a regular iPad in their car similar to what I want to do with the radio behind it.

I just finished my install today! I want to post a thread...but need to get my 3 posts up first lol. (I'm new around here!)

I'm using a stereo mounted behind the tablet, pretty much like you are thinking of. Reason behind that is mostly to 1) preserve steering wheel controls and 2) allow bluetooth phone pairing for taking calls.

I'm surprised at how well everything works so far. I'll post pics as soon as this forums lets me create a thread

It looks like it fit perfectly into the factory bezel and you didn't have to do much modification.

So I know mine is a Nexus 7 / Playbook setup but I thought I would share my setup, might spark an Idea for the Ipad mini (), I am not a Pro here, just an average guy that made a mount that works perfectly for my needs, with the Tablet buttons and charging ports accessible wile installed (both tablets), I guess more a removable/convertible install.

Here is my audio setup Link (originally)

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2300312

And here is the setup I made 2 nights ago for my Nexus7 over the top of my headunit. *I still have some minor cleanup to do on the bracket edges (blacking the edges).

Basically I made a two 3 sided brackets , bottom (resting for tablet), side, front and a top "L" bracket to keep it from falling backwards when accelerating. Then screwed them into the face-plate with very little screws from the back.

The brackets basically create a 1 centimeter cube for the tablet to sit on/in, I used 3mm thick carbon-fiber sheet as material. I also mounted it so that there is a 8mm gap from the bottom so the factory radio buttons are still accessible even with the tablet in in use.

Why make it this way, I wanted to keep the Pioneer unit and backup camera for when I do not want to use the tablet (removable/convertible).

I case anyone wonders I use MiFi for my Nexus and or navigation when the tablet is in use. I connect the tablet to the headunit via bluetooth. I even use the steering wheel controls for voice commands and skipping on the tablet and yes my phone is also paired at the same time and I can use the wheel answer and hangup wile the tablet is in. In short when setting up the Bluetooth you have to specify what funtions the tablet has and what functions the phone has (phone = phone only, no streaming audio).

I am using "Car Home" as the Home screen wile in the car

Here are pictures:

Headunit only:

with Tablet:

I didn't think this was a good idea at all when I first read it. Sounded like it was being forced and just wouldn't work. The video really changed my mind. I wouldn't do it myself as I would just rather have a double din head unit, but it seems very well implemented here.

My only complaint about DD Head Units is the fact that they are essentially obsolete the day they hit the market. I find them painfully slow and fairly dead-ended when it comes to applications, upgrades, and all that fun stuff.

The fact that I can put my Pioneer DEH-80PRS in application mode and connect virtually any i-Device to it really has me thinking of sticking an iPad mini in front of it.
