Subaru Stars Converting 02WRX to RWD...

Okay, so I'm sure this has been discussed in the past but just hear me out for a second. I have an early generation USDM 02 WRX, the gearboxes on them are notorious for breaking, hence the reason they went 1mm thicker in later versions. My question is, is there a basic DIY scenario to convert to RWD?

I love AWD don't get me wrong, but there is 150K on my WRX and I would really love to not have to replace a transmission anytime soon. I can only imagine the strain and stress converting to RWD would take off the tranny.

On top of this, my clutch is beginning to wear significantly, and will most likely need to be replaced in the future. I would like to upgrade to a nice stage 1 clutch and lighter flywheel while at the same time not putting more strain on my tranny.

Obviously, like any other man with a dream I would love to go full JDM EJ207 sti swap in the future, but for now just looking for some pointers.

The transmission is not "glass" and if you are worried about it retrofit the clutch delay valve later WRX's have as subaru's real fix to the "weak" transmissions. They made it impossible to drop the clutch which reduced the shockload on the transmission. Or, don't drive like an idiot and it will hold up fine.

RWD conversion can be done with the transmission still in the car, but it will make the transmission weaker, not stronger. All your power will be going through the rear transfer gears and the r160 rear diff, both of which are not strong enough to put up with much abuse. I've grenaded multiple r160's with a 135hp 2.2l. Shredded a few sets of rear transfer gears too.

You're taking all the power and running it through gears only designed to handle half the power. That's increasing stress, not reducing it. RWD will also encourage abuse.
