I own a 1986 BRAT. Love it lots, but the EA81 engine I has a blown head gasket and possibly more. I got a replace meant engine (EA71) but that had a cracked block.
![]() Anyone know of a place where I can get a EA81 or EA71 w/ shipping for cheap/reasonably pricing. Or if I can scrap the EA71 to make the EA81 any good? According to Wiki the EA81 is a stroked out EA71. Looking at the two, they look just about the same. Plus anyone know where I can get the jumpseats in the back, and possibly a camper top? As well as exterior parts?

The EA81 is a pretty sturdy engine. If it JUST has a blown head gasket... reseal it and it should be good to go.
The best place to buy parts for your brat is e-bay, craigslist or the USMB. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/ |

Well, It was able to run from Atlanta, GA to Prattville, AL (Near Montgomery) with only a heater hose issue. (Had to make a few stops, but made it nonetheless.) I've yet to tear it apart, due to mostly experience. But there's definitely a blown head gasket. I was looking at a head gasket set, wasn't sure if it's right for my engine though. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/?cmd=...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

Thats the right gasket set for the EA81.
Check out Rockauto.com, they have it for about $10 cheaper. The seats and other parts can be found over at USMB. |

Well, The engine is finished, it looks and works fairly well.
Sorry for lack of pics, I keep forgetting. But It still needs some work. One major issue, the engine only seems to want to continue running (after intial startup) with the Carb in full choke. It's a Hitachi Carb, was rebuilt. Though it needed 2 rebuild kits and still a few things weren't done. I'm wondering if the issue is the carb, or something else. Also, I'm looking at getting a Weber Carb, but I don't know what model I should get, and if there's any adaptive stuff to get with it. To add to things I need, I also need a lot of exterior and some interior parts. (For looks, and so the Cops don't have an urge to pull me off the road.) |

On my brat I personally used a 32/36 DGEV. (electric choke is what the E means) If you see a DFEV its reversed (works better on an EA82, get the DGEV)
If you get the whole kit you more or less have what you need. Sometimes it seems to bolt on, sometimes you may have to figure out afew things for yourself. Like what to do with the EGR and PCV stuff. You pretty much need the carb, air cleaner, adapter plate to bolt to hitachi intake manifold, MAYBE a T fitting for the fuel line (on my brat I remember having one, but maybe it came from a carter-weber or something... been too many years) and you may need to buy some plastic fittings and heater hose to plumb the PCV lines properly. Not too hard though. |

Well would the 32/36 DGV work? It has a manual choke. And does Weber have the adapter plate, or do I have to get in somewhere else?

this is the kit I purchased 2 different times. one for a ea81- one for a ea82. both worked flawlessly and ran perfect right out of the box. |

Though I've got a 36/32 DGEV Weber on it now. Had some smoke issues, but a few miles down the road cleared it up eventually. Runs and drives ok, need to get everything worn it a bit, and still learning to handle the shorten acceleration assy. Though my dad's thinking it'd be wise to install an overflow bottle for the coolant, make sure how it'll work with my vehicle. If anyone's tried, please let me know. Will submit more when I can. |

A manual choke will work if you want to go that route. I prefer electric, some people like manual, they even make a water choke.

We went Electric, being that the Hitachi's electric too.
Also, soon we're gonna take apart the EA71, will a little hope and a lot of prayer that the block isn't cracked and it's just a head gasket that's really screwed. My dad is thinking that it possbily might be just a really blown head gasket or messed up head because of how well it ran(for short periods) without the coolant in it. We've already got the kit for it, so all else fails we can try to part out what's good and get something out of it. |

Hey, I'm having issues with the shifting on the Brat. It's crazy loose. I'm thinking maybe the bushings in the shifter need replacing. Trying to go into 3rd is like trying to go into 5th on any other vehicle, and 4th is like going into 6th. I've read somewhere that it may just be a bolt issue, but I figured I'd ask y'all first. Plus see where/what'd be the best to get such.

They usually get loose on the transmission side. There's a bracket that slides onto the shifter rod that is held on with a roll pin. I've seen guys use a bolt and nut to hold the two together but I've never done it.
