Default ej20 sti engine 2003 wrx?

bought a wrx with a supposed sti engine. it clearly says ej20 on the block but has no red manifold or sti on the intercooler. could it be a older sti engine? it pulls way harder than the other wrx i have test driven. possibly a stage 2 wrx and i dont know it???

You will get a lot of hate for what you just did but to each its own. EJ20 is not an STI engine, it's a WRX engine. As for the intercooler I can't tell you but you can look at the scoop, if it has a spliter then it's from an STI, if not then is a WRX. I am sorry to say but you got scammed. You probably have a WRX with a tune.

you shouldnt be answering peoples questions. all jdm sti engines are ej20's. and what does the scoop have to do with the engine? they could have swapped the engine without touching the scoop.

is also possible the wrx intake manifold and intercooler were re-used on an sti engine. its also possible its not an sti engine at all though. did the seller mention if it was supposed to be a jdm or usdm engine?

Nice to see that the new mod makes fun of people in the newbie forum; it sets a great example

Not sure if you could claim to have an STi engine without a red intake, unless it pre-dated the ej207, which seems unlikely. Maybe some type of hybrid engine with mix and match components.

The only logical thing to do is take it to a tuner who can determine if you have AVCS or not. Other than that theres not much you can do by simply "looking" in the engine bay. Sorry to say it, but most likely you got screwed. It happens to all of us at least once.

sounds like you were sold a WRX with a stage2 tune, but honestly who knows (obviously not you because no research was done before purchasing the car). You need to get off the internets and go to a local shop that knows subarus and have them take a look at it.

If that was making fun of someone, then some people have thin skin.

Too many idiots in this thread. I thought this forum was around to help those who obviously dont know enough to answer their questions.

Every 2.0L engine has EJ20 stamped on it. That includes the USDM WRX engine and the JDM STI Engines (including my V7 EJ207).

Check the timing cover (front of your engine, facing the radiator) and you should find a sticker. Let us know what the sticker says and we can hopefully identify the engine for you.

If you want to check if its stage 2, take a look at the downpipe. Does it still have the stock, uncut heat shielding around it? If so, there's a good chance its still stock because most aftermarket downpipes require the heatshielding be at least cut.

Posting a lot of pictures will help too.

The only 2.0 STi engine was JDM (Japanese Domestic Market).

So if it says "Made in Japan" anywhere then its an STi.

Check the timing belt cover/ tune/ Google "ej207"

I believe this might be true. The JDM engines have higher rev limits ~8k. However you can change the rev limit on any car with a tune. Mine is set at 7.5k factory is 7k.

Is the seller said sti he could have meant 2 things. : 2.5 litter short block with 2.0 heads and stuff, this is a hybrid build. or a 2.0 JDM STi import from japan.

Wrong. USDM was the only market to not get them.

for everyone getting a kick out me buying a car with not knowing what engine is in it exactly. I bought the car cause it was a steal of deal. just about everything was fresh and brand new nothing needed to be replaced. it was all done a couple weeks before i bought it. i have a invoice for engine swap. when i went in to look/buy this car, i went in the mind set that it had a wrx engine and that the owner had no idea what they were talking about. As some logical and helpful people above stated. it might be a hybrid engine. on the invoice it states that a jdm ej20 engine as installed then a used intake a turbo assembly was installed after. thats what makes me think its a sti block. i just want to figure out so i can see if i will be able to run a accessport. i have only been on this forum for one day. so far not the greatest introduction. i thank everyone who were actually trying to help me out cheers

Ok, I cleaned this up a little.

OP, I don't know the answer, but you say you have an invoice. Do you have the source of that invoice? Is it a shop or a parts importer? I would think that that would have the info to get you a phone number and call and ask.

There are some pieces of info here. You might not know without pulling the engine apart and looking at the block.....which would be ridiculous to do.

Do some research. Are there different casting marks? Hints pulling the oil pan? I don't know.....

If its a 2.0L does it have AVCS, thats a fast way of knowing if its a ej207.

Other wise the factory VIN# on the lower pass side timing cover area is what we need to ID it. There is one on the back Dr Side of the motor/head too but they dont hang on too long or get melty/crud covered fast.

find a tuner or someone that can pull the rom off your ecu.
If its a JDM STi ecu it is not supported by Cobb Accessport at this time.

Awesome when a moderator has to clean up another moderator's mess, huh?

OP, didn't you get a pre-purchase inspection done before you bought it? Take it to a shop that knows Subarus, they will be able to tell you what's in the car. Or ask the previous owner?

Later variants of the EJ205 also had AVCS also. So not a good indication.

yea, last time i checked, all jdm motors are 2.0L. the 2.5 was a USDM thing. only because they thought it would be a better seller to the public and more daily driveable with the added low end torque.

Well they have 2.5 turbos in Japan too, but not STi. They have a 2.5 turbo forester too.
