That is the question no arguements please!
Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it seems to me your poll is flawed and you're collecting garbage.

If someone chooses "blown a ringland", they cannot also choose whether or not they were denied a warranty claim.

And they could have been "denied warranty coverage", but their claim may not have had anything to do with a ringland.

You could go with three possibilities.
How many people with only a stage 1 tune have:
1. Not blown a ringland
2. Blown a ringland and been denied warranty coverage.
3. Blown a ringland and not been denied warranty coverage.

If you want to stick with those 3, you'll also need to stipulate whether or not choices 2 and 3 occurred after they flashed back to the stock tune (unmarried the AP).

Or you could go with 5 choices:
How many people with only a stage 1 tune have:
1. Not blown a ringland
2. Blown a ringland and were denied warranty coverage (after flashing back to stock tune).
3. Blown a ringland and were denied warranty coverage (did not flash back to stock tune).
4. Blown a ringland and were not denied warranty coverage (after flashing back to stock tune).
5. Blown a ringland and were not denied warranty coverage (did not flash back to stock tune).

And you misspelled "argument".

^There is no RIGHT answer. It is to see what has happened to people with stage 1 tunes. you want me to admit that they can tell and ringlands can blow anytime?

And if you have to point out one misspelling on an internet FORUM
you sir have issues

Datbacker59, why did you limit it to 2010 model and up? How am I supposed to select "2006, blown ringland at 99,xxx miles, no warranty?"

We all have issues. Pointing out the misspelling was just for fun.

Did you miss the part where I pointed out that your poll is flawed to the point of being completely worthless?

This is what I've learned through lots of research on this site and the iwsti forum about Stage I AP and what Subaru can and can't see. This includes first hand accounts from a few of the more "honest" Subaru techs on the forums:

1) Subaru can tell if the AP is installed.

2) Subaru can not tell if the AP has been removed. The only indication on the ECU code is the "check sum value" (CSV). This is basically a log of motor starts. When the AP is removed and the orginal tune reinstalled, the old CSV value is posted to the ECU. Depending on when you installed the AP (right off the lot or years later), the CSV value could be a small or large. The CSV value is reset EVERY time you disconnect the battery. Many will say Subaru will question why the CSV value is low (compared to mileage) if you bring the car in with a motor problem. This is easily refutted by the car owner by simply saying the battery was disconnected recently to do a multitude of maintenance related tasks which specifially state unplugging the battery is necessary for safety. The owner must be quick thinking though when stating such information when questioned.

3) Open source tunes can be seen when installed and AFTER removal. The open source tunes do not have the ability like the AP to take a "snap shot" of all values of the prior tune and replace to stock. Certain lines of code don't match and that's Subaru's evidence of tampering.

4) Bring in your car in with an aftermarket downpipe and your chances of warranty go down expotentially.

I値l admit I知 stupid and thought forums are stupid websites for stupid people to ask stupid questions.

I've tried searching for answers here and it generally comes up with way to much useless information. Maybe I知 doing something wrong?

According to Wikipedia an Internet Forum, or message board, is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages. It doesn't say anything about being badgered for posting questions.

Maybe Wikipedia should come up with a term for people who badger people for posting questions on a forum. Should that should be new thread? I tried searching but couldn't come up with anything.

If you池e bothered by people who post questions to a forum then do us all a favor and stay off. It's a forum, meant to spoon feed people answers and opinions.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Your assumption here is that all conversations are peaceful and never get out of line. Asked the same question 30 times in a given period, you'll get cranky like everyone else.

I do give you a thumbs up on the thread idea and searching for it.

I think the fact Subaru chose to use the wrong material for the pistons has something to do with it. Lots of data supporting the fact hypereutectic pistons don't hold up well in FI applications. They're strong, but also brittle. Doesn't take much of a detonation event to crack a ringland, which is one of the most brittle parts of the piston because the material is very thin there. A tune helps to prevent detonation, but not 100% of the time. The best tune in the world can't always compensate for poor fuel quality or fuel with too low of an octane rating for the tune.

Let's throw another wrench into the equation. How many WRX/STI's have blown or not blown ringlands who's owners are not members of this, or any other Subaru site and/or do not post when it happens.

BOOM

To add to that, I'd love to have a crystal ball and know the percentage of WRX/STI owners who have never blown a ringland compared to the percentage of owners who have. Maybe the whole "blown ringland" issue is blown way out of proportion? Pun intended.

Edit: And congrats on your moderator-ness, Hinshaw. Caught me off guard to see you in black and gold all of a sudden.

why 10-12 and not 08-12 ?

close to be the same cars no ?

anyways, no ringlands o n my stg 1 AP 08 and the dealer, told me NOT to put a COBB AP on as it will void the warranty... BUT i can remove cats, put a CAI and a BOV without having any problems...

after explaining to them that all these mods except for the BOV will mak the car leaner and blow pistons, they looked at me as i didn't know what i was talking about..

so i put one still to make it more reliable and get the extra hp too..

How many of you are Stage 1 and have:

1. Blown a ringland

Yes.

3. Been DENIED warranty coverage because of ACCESSPORT(not void warranty)

Denied not because of Accessport, but because I had aftermarket wheels. SOA used that as evidence stating that I was racing/abusing/tracking the STI which caused the #4 Cylinder Ringland to fail (Complete BS of course as I got wheels for cosmetic reasons. If I were tracking the car I would have gotten Tires instead....). They could not find any evidence of the Accessports OTS Map that was loaded on there. They replaced it anyway as a one-time customer loyalty thing. I had to sign agreeing to the fact that if it fails again they won't cover it.

I wouldn't have cared if I had to pay or not. Stock or not I bought the STI used and was waiting for the failure. If I had to pay I would have just had the dealer Machine and drop in Forged Pistons for me that I'd pay for. The Labor cost they quoted me wasn't bad.

There is another dealership here where an owner had the signature failure and didn't bother removing any of his Stage 2 parts or unmarrying his AP. They replaced the Piston and Ringland free of charge as a one-time loyalty thing. Owner didn't even bother removing the COBB stickers he had

It's probably different everywhere else. I don't know who makes the calls on this kind of stuff down here.

This isn't relevant to the OP, but bone-stock STI's that have had the failure down here have had it replaced without having to sign that one-time only loyalty statement. One has failed twice and been covered twice. Still didn't have to sign.....but he's bone-stock.

Another person who didn't have to sign had a Catback and a drop in Panel Filter. Those seemed to be within acceptable parameters as well.

With all that stated can these Threads die now?

I've got a 2011 with 45,000 kms. Going strong only thrown 2 codes one at 1600 km and one at 12,000. Only mod is muffler delete.

Now i have a few buddies with the same year and 4 out of 6 have had a blown ringland. 2 cars stock and 2 modded to stage 1. Same climate, similar km's and driving styles.
