A thin layer of clearcoat should protect from debris AND cloud/fade, though at that point you'd be better off grabbing some vinyl for reversibility factors if you f up, it fades, or change your mind down the line.

^probably not a good idea.

the paint comes off pretty easily. I painted my tails first, didn't like it (mostly because I sprayed on a humid day and got lots of hazing), stripped it a week later and installed the vinyl.

fast forward a year, I have removed the vinyl and re-painted, this time with a UV blocking clear coat. We'll see how long it lasts.

I used Acetone on my tails to remove the paint. It didn't cloud the tails but it definitely had some sort of reaction with them. When stripping the paint, i would notice some light hazing. This all came off with one last wipe with an acetone soaked microfiber so I don't know if it was just residue, or what, but they're clear as stock.

I prefer the look of the paint vs the typical red overlays. i've heard you can get darker color red overlays from 3M which i may look into, but for now, I'm giving it a go with metal cast and a uv blocking acrylic clear.

Ive had great luck with yellow Rok Blocker headlight overlays, they are bullet proof and have stood up to multiple seasons of bugs, road debris, and pressure washing/chemicals and havent faded at all. Id have no problem running this same material (3m?) on the tails and plan to do so. Yours will be pink or faded sooner or later, trust me.

i don't see how you think a paint that's covered by a uv blocking clear coat will be more susceptible to fading then a thin plastic film.

your vinyl overlays will fade just as quick if not quicker then my paint, trust me, I've had the overlays.

and i have overlays on my headlights and foglights too, not like you're the only one. The red overlays just look like crap compared to paint.

Default Thanks

I just painted my taillights the other day with Krylon (had to order it online) and am very satisfied with how it looks. Thanks for the DIY. I'd say the hardest part of the whole thing was the last screw on the inner lights, but it was an easy process thanks to this write up.

I found testors color called "gloss custom red". The cap is a transparent red color but I see everyone on here using the "transparent candy red". I didn't see that and the michaels store told me they didn't carry the krylon stained glass paint
