Default heat & a/c fade in and out

sorry if this is the wrong area but i wasnt sure where to go.
as of a few days ago i noticed that when my heater is on it has sudden cold spells. it doesnt matter if ive been driving 2 minutes or 2 hours it still fades to cold and after a little bit it comes back to hot. well yesterday we had an unseasonably warm day so i cut the ac on for the extra comfort. ac was perfectly fine, freezing as usual, but then it kinda faded out as if the vents were open and the ac was off (but it was still on) ive noticed with the heater if i drive conservatively it fades cold more often than if i drive aggressively. so, anyone else had any similar issues? is there a simple fix?
thanks in advanced, kolby

that was a thought but i hoped it would be something simple. plus i didnt think it was "old" enough for things to be going out. (by old i mean i still consider my car to be fairly new, ive and cars twice as old twice the miles that still ran flawless with original equipment)
sorry, i forgot to mention this earlier but its an 02 wrx 116xxx miles

went through a thermostat in my 02 with less miles....although they are simple to change out, minus the mess, its really only a hose clamp and two bolts
