I was wondering if your subaru still running? did you have to replace the engine like other members mentioned? or have a "catostrophic failure" ? I have a 2004 Subaru sti, which have the symptons you had on your car.within 1 week i had to replace 2 turbos, and after a month the 3rd it seems going bad. starts with a "sneezing of the engine" as seen on the youtube video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpOZTh8AVUY] and also the P0021 codes. thanks for your help and your time.

Forever022, did you clean out the oil pan thoroughly for each time you blew the turbo? Because if you did not, you will keep on blowing turbos.

![]() Ive been on suicide watch and have spent hours the past two days reading every thread/post regarding this issue. It makes me sick to my stomach..... I absolutely love my car and to see all this banjo bolt related turbo/engine failure. Ugh!!! I am pissed I had not noticed this issue earlier so I could have done some pre-emptive maintenance. I have a 2008 5 dr WRX with 57408 on the odometer. Let me start by saying I bought the car with 44500 last september (2011). It has a Perrin CAI and I dont believe anything else. The previous owner pulled the can off the back and I liked the exhaust note so I have been procrastinating getting the new canister back on. So I have been using Mobil 1 syn 5w-30 and have had four oil changes since I bought the car. Just did an oil/filter change Weds. Checked all fluids and everything was normal. Within 20 miles throw the codes 0011 0021. I reset them and start reading the banjo bolt avcs oil filter threads and decide rather than pulling them I will take car to dealer after the holiday weekend. So as I was on my way home from work at red lights I noticed white smoke when slightly bump revving the engine from idle into boost 0-3psi also it had a sweet smell to indicate coolant with a hint of rubber so it was confusing. I got home to discover the coolant resivor level was low but I had fluid under both pressure caps. I am flipping out now because I cant afford to rebuild a turbo let alone an engine. I scared SOA will not honor powertrain warranty and I am preparing to quick sell my motorcycle to cover at least the cost of a turbo replacement. It sucks I discover this on way home from work since I work right next to my local subie dealer. I am hoping they will honor a tow and loaner out of warranty but anxiety ridden that SOA wont honor it. Any thoughts would be much apr. I will keep you all posted - should have the car towed into dealership tomorrow. Fingerscrossed and Ive become religious today - looking for a miracle. PS - As a contingency I was considering MAYBE a BRZ and trading this one in to get away from turbo oiling issues ... Then I see they are having different issues with that car as well. WTF? |

PS - I have confirmed there is coolant in the oil and I see no metal so far. No smoking oil fill. The dipstick looks a half qt lower than it was when I changed it 60 miles ago. Which is discouraging.

PPS - trying to get to work on time and was wondering if I can/should disable the turbo and drive it 12 miles to work instead of waiting around all morning for a tow?

OMG - sorry to keep adding but I did also notice on two occasions the "sneezing" or "air escaping from a ballon" sound at low rpm shifting from 1st to 2nd gear.

It was the turbo seal failure. Thank god it happened 2700 miles before my powertrain warranty expires.
New turbo under warranty Woo-hoo!! Now I just hope this isnt a "band aid" that will turn into a reoccuring problem after Im out of the warranty period. Hmmmmn. Uncle Scotty - just wanted to thank you for the added anxiety with your rush to judgement. You need to understand that not all of us hard workinig folks have a fat wallet to comfort them from the thought of catastrophic failures. I had only hope that it wasnt too serious a problem. Im just thankful it was covered and I didnt have to sacrifice my motorcycle to do a rebuild. Next time you thow your $.02 in try reading the entire post instead of just spewing off at the fingertips. |

I know you don't like it, but the uncle speaks the truth. I see bad things in your future. The oil isn't helping at all.

Thanks for the cander - sorry about being flipant Unlce S but its been an emotional weekend wondering WTF is going on with this. I work for a bike dealership so I understand service departments tendancy to take the path of least resistance.
Is there something wrong with Mobile 1 then? I may have typed in the wrong weight. I was using the exact weight thats labled on the oil fill cap. In any event - I think the best course of action at this point is to baby this thing into a trade on a 2013 or left over 2012 (if they are still out there), OR dare I say it - EVO time. It sucks that these cars are so tempramental because I have never loved a car so much. I used to be big into Euro cars 10-15 years ago but got frustrated with all the $$$ and BS. I was in a borrowed 911 cruising a valley road at 100mph and got my ass handed to me by a pair of sportbikes. Then it dawned on me.... I am in a $100K Porsche and just got layed to waste by a $10K sportbike. Plus in the mod department $ per HP you grab tons more HP for the money. Another one of lifes mysterys I guess - in the quest for adrenalin/speed. Anyone know where I can purchase a cheap F16? LOL. Id still rather have a reliable WRX anyday. |

hey man, just saw your other thread:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2437043 which lead me to search for this one... so, subaru DID give you the warranty after all? did you leave your intake on when you took it in? you have an AP too, i imagine? did you leave it flashed? did they sweat you about it? shortly after buying my used 08 with a warranty, the throwout bearing started jingling, so SOA replaced my clutch under warranty. but the service guy was trying to scare me that they may not replace it if they think i have been "racing" it. at the time, the only mod i had was my rear sway bar. i typically drive fairly gently. so now i have a cobb sf intake. lately i have been noticing a strange subtle squeaky/squealy noise moments after shifting at low rpm. no codes though. it sounds like it might be the beginning of the same turbo seal issue issue as yours? our mileage is super similar. i was thinking of throwing my stock intake back on, just to be safe, before i take it in. i don't want to be denied the warranty work. I only have a Perrin CAI and I am canisterless (no muffler) other than that I have no other mods or deleted factory parts(no AP - yet). I was sweating it to but the dealership never even batted an eyelash at it. I told the service writer I did some research and that I thought it was possibly a blown turbo (noise) and possibly a head gasket (becuase coolant was burning off). He insisted that if it was a head gasket there would be signs of external leakage first (first oil and then coolant) before it would consume coolant and oil. The first words out of his mouth were "well I guess I was wrong about the turbo" then he went on to say the moment the tech read the description of the noise ( I described the noise as "Air escaping the stretched hole of a balloon" - iguess in retrospect I could have also described it as a vaginal quief, LOL) he suspected it was the turbo which he later confirmed the seals were shot. You would have to remove your up pipe and inpect the "out" side of turbo for signs of leakage. At this point though you have read my other posts and I feel for you. It sucks especially to have $18-20K in a car that based on these reports and popular opinion is facing catastrophic engine failure at some point. Of course Mark Twain once said "One who lives his life by the advice of medical journals- may one day die of a misprint". Good luck and please post info on your findings. It make me wonder how many people had this problem and because they got favorable results or some resolution to the problem they never documented it or followed up posting their findings. I'd like to be optimistic that I can get 130-150K miles of use out of at least the motor - I dont mind spending $1500 every 60K miles for a turbo. Its a fair trade for the absolute joy this car brings me. |

Scotty knows his stuff. I had my turbo seal go and XXX miles later my engine, number 4 to be exact went. I am rebuilding the motor all this week.
Also if you only have a CAI and no tune, says a lot. Use paragraph breaks, by the way. |

seriously though, did you get a code or just distinct sounds? this noise i have is pretty subtle and quiet, yet the car "seems" fine. i really can only hear it with the radio off. i notice it even when barely boosting. i'll shift at 2500 to 3000, let the clutch back out, and a moment or so later i barely hear a brief squeal. maybe i have something entirely different developing? the similarity to my car and stuntwrx's car's year and mileage piqued my curiosity. before i take it in, i think i'm going to play it safe and reflash to stock and throw my stock airbox back in, just to avoid any warranty hassles. i am avoiding installing my DP for fear of compromising the warranty. :/ +1 Last edited by isotopesope; 11-27-2012 at 05:12 PM. |
