Too bad Ford and Mazda are no longer corporate cousins. We might have had a V6 ecoboost with a manual transmission.

didn't read thread, but I call bull****. Every year, the diesel is just 2 years away, no matter which manufacturer.

OK, now Mazda is confirming the diesel again, but not saying when. Apparently, the 2014 model arrives in showrooms in January 2013 with the gas powerplant.

if they combined a diesel with a 6 speed manual, I might be interested.

Dear Mazda,

If you put a 6-speed in one of these diesels, I will buy one.

Diesel 6MT sedan in second half of 2013 is what I understood. I'd expect 170hp/280tq, ~30/40 city/hwy for around $30k. My wife is getting it in an automatic. The 6-speed will only be available super-base model anyhow, I'm sure.

Can we just drop this motor with a 6-speed manual (and an LSD) into a Mazda 3?

Shame that diesel is $.90/gallon more expensive than regular now. With everyone and their mom getting 35mpg with 180hp 4cyls and 6ATs, the high fuel cost eats up almost all efficiency savings.

What's up with that? I saw that huge discrepancy in the South this past week (VA, NC, SC). The gap is not as wide in the Mid-Atlantic states (NJ, PA, DE) where I'd expect more diesel is diverted for heating oil during the winter months.

The TDI's OBC is a couple MPG's generous on fuel economy reading. Still, a good fuel sipper.

I'm a little worried about the price gap growing. It's as much as $0.50 for me in PA. The biggest I've ever seen was $1 back in 2007, $4/gal for reg, $5/gal for diesel.

Even if I start breaking even, my 140hp 240ft-lb beats the tar out of the "eco" gassers. It's more fun than it has any right to be. The bigger 4-cyls never touch my mileage unless you legit hypermile and the little 4-cyls are severe dogs. They're all insufferable. I've driven them all, too many rental cars. I have nightmares of these soulless, bland Americars sawing away at my sanity as they aimlessly hunt for gears in a never-ending waltz of slushy groaning and point A to B.. transit. Sorry, had to get that off my chest. Fwiw the ~120hp diesels in Europe are dogs too and not so fun.

Yea, it got me about 3 times now. Like, it IS coming!? Oh yea, no. Mazda is taking orders on the gas 6, I figure in a few months they'll be taking them on the diesel, and I've given my old lady the green light on it. She's pumped. But they better not announce the wagon for the next MY after we take delivery of a sedan. I'll go into a coma.

Seriously. I don't even want or need a small suv, but Mazda's driving dynamics paired with diesel efficiency and torquez would be a hard combination to resist. Dat 2.2l...hrrrngh...
