The extra 2 to 3 gallons is added with our reservoir tank! our primary tank holds 12 gallons.

On a side note don't try to top it off. I see a lot of people who once it clicks they try to pump more in, do not do this, once it clicks stop... (Not to mention its pretty silly because you probably only add another 5 or so miles worth of fuel), you can muck up the EVAP system pretty good.

Well are you one of those people that keeps trying to pump after the first click? If you do that enough your EVAP may eventually not be able to vent properly and you will have trouble filling the tank up...

As a side note it is hard on the pumps to be running them down right to the bottom all the time.

I'm pretty sure Subaru didn't put a reserve tank in their cars.

Same info, said twice in a different way

OP are you losing gas milage no? Don't worry about it, I think you are thinking to much into it. IF the needle stops and stays at a certain level and never reaches the full line, then it is the float is stuck etc, etc.

^ not exactly, 1st time I stated overfilling can damage your EVAP system second post I asked if he had been overfilling it and explained why damaging the EVAP system matters to this case.

just trying to pull more info from the OP because 90% of the time I've found when a car consistently refuses to let the tank fill it is an evap issue and with a car that new it would have to be something out of the ordinary like misuse (topping up).

The float issue is also a possibility but again it seems so odd with a car that new.
