My issue started yesterday! 1950 miles. When pushing the clutch in or out I feel the vibration most in the mid point of clutch pedal travel. Kind of went away after a few miles. Then today I noticed it again...not as pronounced and came and went. What is it?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
No real climate changes temp wise...it has been much drier the last few days... |

i think it's the shift fork not being lubed enough. i dont think its 100% clear. thats why i never brought it in for that issue, and like i said it went away at about 30k miles, LOL!

Is the shift fork something easy to lube? I'm not a mechanic and not looking to take anything apart...wasn't sure if it was something to easily get at.

2011 WRX, I have a service appointment for my 30,000 mile service as well as the grittiness/rigid clutch pedal feel through it's path of travel. Hoping to get it taken care of as it leaves me fairly uneasy. My car also has the noise from the throwout bearing during cold starts so hopefully they can get to the bottom of something. I'll report back once I drop it off and hear back from them.

I've noticed a gritty viratory feel to the clutch pedal. Mine also makes a creak whenever you press or let off.
I'm interested to see what fixes, if any, dealers and individuals come up with. |

'12 WRX (10,490 miles) and I have noticed this just recently. This morning it happened around 30 minutes into my usual morning drive and it never went away. The handful of other times it would go away with the pumping of the clutch a few times in while in nutreal. I'm thinking maybe there is a tiny leak in the system somewhere that allows air in from time to time? I'm going to try and go over everything I can this Sunday and see what I can find.

So I looked in my reservoir Sunday and there is a chunk of black "glop" at the bottom. It's also present in my brake reservoir as well. I plan to bleed both systems this weekend. The gritty feel is gone at the moment, but I'm sure it will come back.

I'm not sure that air in the system would cause this kind of thing. |

Sounds to me like it might just be the gear lash...

Same intermittent grittiness/vibration through clutch pedal travel issue, usually after hard driving. Started appearing around 5k I would say. Used to have to pump a lot when it first started, but now a few pumps take it away immediately if it occurs. 20k miles now on an '11 WRX completely stock. Post up if you guys find any solutions.

I've been trying to pinpoint what exactly causes the vibration to come back, and I think I have an idea. Usually it's after a WOT pull to near-redline, regardless of if it's in 4th gear on the highway or in 2nd on the street.
What I have noticed though is that if I am about to shift up with the pedal to the floor, and make a conscious effort to lift my foot off the gas just a fraction of a second earlier (so that the gas is no longer being pushed at all by the time the clutch is all the way in, i.e. no revs jumping up further, even slightly, when the clutch is pushed in), the vibration doesn't happen. However, if I shift even slightly sloppily (push the clutch in and the revs jump up slightly due to not having my foot fully off the gas yet), the vibration comes back almost 100% of the time. Still testing this theory, so let me know if you guys find the same or not. Of course, still no idea at all as to what the mechanical cause could be. But it least it seems like if you make upshifts precise and don't get lazy shifting, leaving your foot on the gas, this prevents the vibration from occuring. Could be wrong. ![]() |

Update:
Took the car in to my local dealer and took a ride w/ one of their techs on the highway. He definitely felt the problem as in my car it occurred 90% of the time when shifting at around 5-6k. They opened everything up, and their diagnosis was "Clutch throw out bearing loose and grinding causing premature wear to clutch." They replaced the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, spring release lever retainer, and throwout bearing (and a couple misc gaskets bolts and spring on the exhaust assembly), all under warranty. Got the car back and the first thing I noticed was the clutch pedal felt light as a feather compared to earlier! Car drives great now, and no more issues with vibration so far! Props to Cityside Subaru in Belmont, MA. The guy working on my car (think his name was Brian) was pretty cool. |

I'm starting to think they have some defective throw-out bearings. Mine has been slightly audible (ticking) from day one and seems to have good/bad days, but has only gotten louder over time (still pretty minor with no squeaks, just light ticking that goes away when you disengage the clutch). I noticed the vibration near the engagement point around October or so and it has been coming and going since then (often worse in the cold, but not always and it can do it when I leave for work and have stopped before I'm halfway there). No signs of slip thus far and I'm now at about 15k miles. The vibration is disconcerting, however.
I've read in different threads on here lack of grease on the clutch fork and now a loose bearing. Add to this all the threads about odd premature clutch failures on recent year models, I no longer have much confidence in Subaru's clutches. I do know my clutch was VERY light when I first got the car and steadily got heavier as time went on (dealer even remarked this would happen when I mentioned how light it felt compared to my '04 WRX that I traded in for the '11). My last WRX ('04) I got used at 2 years, 36k but it felt pretty even throughout the time I had it (traded at 80k miles). |

Yep, to second that, maybe it's partly my imagination, but clutch definitely feels slightly heavier now than immediately after the repair. However, no recurrence of the vibration/grittiness so far so no complaints!

I'm still getting the odd vibration feeling on and off even with warmer weather the past two days. Pumping the clutch several times sometimes makes it go away. I'm thinking the clutch fork grease theory sounds very plausible here.
