Burning oil

Hey guys, my '12 WRX sedan seems to be burning a stupid amount of oil; I topped it off to F on the dipstick, 5 days later I'm at L... Any ideas as to what it could be? Car has cai and 3" cattless dp, tuned on 91 by Rallinspired. Any help is appreciated!

Oil consumption can be caused by a broken ringland.

Jeebus...that's a lot of oil...You sure you don't have an oil leak or something like that? I don't know how you wouldn't notice white exhaust if you're burning all that oil...

On the dip stick full to low represents about 1qt of oil. A quart in 5 days is crazy. Unless your smoking like a diesel is be more inclined to say your leaking it somewhere. If it were me id put the stock parts back on and go see my dealer....or just do a little investigation on your own.

I'm getting it checked for a leak today, but the thing is, there's no smoke coming from my exhaust, at all.

if it isnt leaking it all over the ground....it is being consumed...that means, almost always....a bad piston

Just do a compression check, it's quick and easy and you'll know for sure. I had my old wrx burning oil past the secondary air injection valve that was stuck, never got a CEL for it, was kinda weird. Anyway, hope it's not a piston/ring issue.

Uncle Scotty.. please enlighten me on your thoughts? I know the intake and tbe didn't cause the issues so why give the dealer something to point out and be able back out of a warranty? If the car is that new I would take it back to be fixed, that's what warranties are for right? I've heard lots of things about dealers backing out of major fixes because of tiny mods. My local dealer won't even sell a wrx or sti. No joke. Do you really think my way of thinking is fraudulent? If so I'm sorry. I try to life my life honestly and ethically every step of the way

if you modded the car and it blows up...it is YOUR fault...returning the car to stock and trying to get it warrantied is FRAUD.

the symptoms of the issue are that of a bad piston...and these engines are VERY fragile...and an intake and exhaust are PERFECT to blow one up in a very short time...even with a tune

I totally agree with you U.S. if he had a rotated 35 in there and blew it up. I feel an intake and exhaust with a tune should never lead to a blown motor. I really am not the fraudulent kind of guy. I once bought a new Mac book and dropped it outside of the store in the package. Got it home...wouldn't fire up, and I told them I dropped it and paid for the fix. Subaru sells intakes and some even do tunes at the dealership right? Seems some level of mods would have to be acceptable. Would this maybe only void the warranty on the exhaust and intake system?

For most people, reading the dipstick can be kinda tricky. Did you take like 3 different readings when you saw the oil at the F? If not you may have skewed readings and you arent actually burning that much oil. Thats a TON of oil. Even with a Destroyed ringland thats ALOT of oil. I know for some people they jam the stick back in to hard and the o-ring on the stick causes pressure and gives them inaccurate readings.

I feel like I can never get an accurate reading off that goddamned oil dipstick.

The only way i can get back to back accurate reading is by letting the car sit for 1-2 minutes after driving, removing the oil fill cap to release some pressure and then checking the oil by slowing putting the dipstick in and stopping right at the o-ring. Some people even remove the o-ring. I dont take it that far but my readings are alway the same.

Start your motor up and then remove the oil fill cap, if smoke comes out then you have a broken piston

Here was my experience with this issue. My '07 STi ran great until around 55K didn't burn oil at all and then out of the blue it started burning 1Qt of oil every 500-800 Miles. I brought it in around 58K and they told me it was normal for the STi to burn about 1Qt every 1000 miles. I called their BS and said it's not normal for a vehicle to burn maybe a half Qt in a 3K oil change and then suddenly start burning that much oil." They forced me to do an oil consumption test but they tried to jerk me around and told me to bring it back during a weekday for their mechanic to change the Oil and start the test. I brought it in a little later to start the test. Since I only used royal purple oil I wanted them to continue using it. They charged me $90 for that oil change and then charged me for every Qt. they had to add during the oil consumption test. So much for free fluid top off. They tested 4 times and I had to drive all the way there to get them to add oil and check to see how much they were adding. By the time I got done with the car had over 60K miles on it and they told me that it was normal consumption. I drove around for a while longer and at 67K got tired of spending so much extra $ to top it off I took it to another dealer and told them what happened. They pulled the records from the other dealer and said that this test proved that there was an issue. Now they wanted to do a compression and Leakdown test and if there was no issues found they wanted me to pay for it. Compression test proved that there was a problem with Piston 3 and they had to go in to see the damage. I had to sign a form stating that I would pay for the teardown fee of $1,500 if the problem was discovered to be caused by me and if I decided to not have the work done there they would not reassemble the engine with the broken parts. Repair was over $5,500. Subaru USA was trying to deny the warranty claim because it was at 67K even though I brought it in at 58K. I spent maybe 12hrs of my life total on calls with Subaru USA getting them to pay for this. Finally they agreed to cover it and the dealership started the work. This kicker was when they did the teardown they discovered one of the Cam gears were broken. The Cam gear is made out of plastic and a section of it was broken off and the water pump had to be replaced. I had to pay $600 to do all of those repairs. Once the repair was complete the dealership called me and wanted the $5,500 for the repairs and that I had to pay out of pocket and submit a claim to Subaru USA. Another 2Hrs of calls and I got Subaru USA to pay them directly. If you are burning a lot more oil take it in and demand a leakdown test. The consumption test seemed like a BS test for them to scam me out of warranty. If they would have gone in while under warranty they would have replaced the Cam gear under warranty. The fact is the pistons in the '06 and up are garbage and will fail. I will post photos of the Ringlands and Cam gear if I can find them. BTW Royal Purple stains the Metal inside of the engine a darker color and gives the appearance of excessive wear and tear. If you don't use RP oil great but if they try to say something about the darker metal color then make sure they know you used RP oil.

He has basically a new car, why would he waste the time and possible money doing a compression check when Subaru will do it under warranty?

Who's to say the tune is worth a damn? Maybe there was an issue with the tune, but he didn't data log so he couldn't see it? An intake and exhaust with a tune can blow a motor, but I'm glad you FEEL it shouldn't with your expansive knowledge.

Dropping a $1500 computer and breaking a 5K engine is completely different.

Subaru doesn't sell intakes for newer models anymore. And Subaru dealers do not do tunes, only Subaru updated tunes.

Care to try again?
