Well you could use a split ND filter to knock down the sky during the day. A lot of landscape guys do this still.

They're used to extend shutter speeds. Most common automotive use for a ND is panning during the day.

Yeah, you can use GNDs to reduce the dynamic range of a scene. I don't think I've ever seen a GND used in automotive work, though.

I use a .9 myself when it's massively bright out with no shade. Definitely helps with not blowing things out.

Here's one where I did not have a ND on, and was shooting ISO 50, 1.2, 1/8000 --in other words, maxed... and it was still blowing the image out... did what I could I didn't have my ND with me.



Shots with a .9ND and CP on and even shooting into the sun for a little retro effect but nowhere near 1/8000, maybe 1/250:

Granted these images have some post processing in Lightroom but you get the idea. When it's mid-day with no clouds and super bright out with a fully wide open aperture you're going to have blown out shots (especially with white) that you have to try and recover. Or, you can shoot that same shot at maybe 1/250-1/400 (or slower even) for less blow out.

Thanks for the explanation. I will probably get one down the road. Most of the track events starting in the spring will be mid day so that will obviously help.

All pictures taken with a Nikon D5100. Just picked the Camera up two weeks ago and I am still getting use to the features and etc. I plan on getting some umbrella's and lights soon for some better night shots. These were taken with the kit lens (18-55mm)

Congrats on the camera and welcome to the thread. Were all night shots hand held?

They were shot with a very cheap $8 Tripod from amazon. I plan to upgrade tripods and get some umbrellas soon for better night shots. I used manual mode and I do forget the aperature and shutter. As I get use to the camera hopefully my shots will improve. I had to overprocess them quite a bit using shadow/highlight function in CS3 to bring any color to the pictures. The lighting was horrible and I am hoping to get external light to help.

Ever watch Top Gear? They use GND's all the time with wide-angle exterior car shots.
