Is anyone wetsanding the nightshades BEFORE the clear or just nightshades, clear, then wetsand and polish?

Picked up this can of clear coat tonight, they didnt have the krylon fusion clear at walmart or canadian tire, so i got rustoleum gloss clear instead. It says on the can "also bonds to plastic" so i assume it will be fine. anyone else use this?

From what I gather the most important part is that its a lacquer clear, I don't think the brand matters as much

Default new to me...

Hey guys--

Figured I would post the job I did, and bring this thread back...

bought my WRX a couple months ago (love driving it so far) and thought that for the money, those clear taillights HAD to go. Ended up going with the duplicolor metalcast and the krylon clear lacquer. Spend a Sunday, took the lights off the car and took my time with the job. Overall, super happy with how they came out.

I bought thin pin striping and masked off the reverse sections for that "Saab" look to spray the entire light red, but still allow for the reverse lights to light white. When all was said and done, I used almost the entire can of metalcast and applied about 8 coats of clear. 2 weeks later, I wetsanded the lights and then put 2 more coats of clear on:

so i painted my tail lights last night. did many coats of vht niteshades red because i did them very thin as i wasnt used to using it and i didnt want runs. i almost used the whole can. i waited about an hour and a half after the last coat of niteshades and then i started clear coating. i did a coat every 10 to 15 minutes and did 5 coats. i put the last coat of clear on at roughly 12 am.

I am thinking about wet sanding them with 2000 grit (soapy water) and polishing them with turtle was polishing compound. how long should i wait to do the wetsanding and polish? its been around 17 hours since i painted them.

I just did mine last weekend. I put the final coat of clear on Sunday, and I just waxed and put them on the car last night. I would wait a few days for the clear to cure more before any polishing/waxing, as the clear will be VERY soft. I'll post some pictures later today, came out really nice!

P.S. Don't they say to wait 30 or 60 days before applying wax to a freshly painted body panel? I would imagine the clear will actually take a while to FULLY cure on the tails, just like on a regular body panel.

I used Metalcast and Rustoleum clear. I wet sanded after every other coat of metalcast and between each coat of clear.

Why is everyone using metalcast, when several members have had bad results after some time has gone by, but the niteshades are actually intended for this, and people are deliberately avoiding it.

Looks great! definitely has a factory gloss to it--wetsanding paid off! Regarding the Metalcast vs. Niteshades, I personally like/trust duplicolor products which is why I went with it. I used a lot of duplicolor paint in my school modelmaking days. At the end of the day, they are both just transparent spray tints...I think the longevity comes in with how much clearcoat you seal the lights with.

Slightly off-topic, but 2010REX: how many years old was your car when you debadged the back end? I want to do this but I am worried about the paint color under the badges since mine is 4 years old.

Just got mine done. All done with "VHT", duplicolor clearcoat, 2000 grit sand paper and lots of buffing

Don't mind the 3rd brake light being out, its getting sprayed

Pictures!

It's a bit tedious to get out, the plug is under the trim inside the hatch door, and it's all taped up so I just cut the wires/ splice them back together.

But thanks, I was pretty happy with how they came out

When taking of the spoiler to do the third brake light, is it just the two bolts up by the spoiler on the inside of the hatch?

It's the two little bolts on the outside of the spoiler, right up underneath. Two plastic covers you gotta pop out.

I debadged the trunk a few weeks after buying the car in spring of 2010. I'm sure if you debadged your trunk, a quick polish would make it look fine. I'm actually thinking about taking the "WRX" logo off.

Hello! Just bought my wrx back in december. Decided it was time to try This mod. The first time I used this transparent red rc paint. It came out kind of red-orange. Didn't really like the end result. So a few days later I bought the duplicator metal cast red paint. Wet sanded the previous paint job and sprayed over the red-orange. Wet sanded some more and added clear coat on top. It came out a lot nicer, glossier, and also more red. Thank you for posting how to do this easy mod..now can someone please tell me how to post a picture on here so I can share? Haha sorry new to all this :P
