Default finally got my suspension installed. Very glad i didnt buy coilovers...

Had my mastertech brother install my koni's and rce yellows today, they were in my garage for over a month a little hard to find the time with a new baby. Anyway i was considering coilovers purely for the convenience of them, and glad i didnt get them after driving my car today. I am extremely happy with how the car feels, barely noticeable squatting and nose diving and body roll is much better as well. I have noticed bumps are soaked up well feels much like i would expect a factory sports car to feel not one with after market suspension. I have the struts on full soft for now and will prob keep it there until it warms up and even on full soft the yellows dont bounce down the road so very nice. I have 22mm sway bars f/r and the car will step out now which is an added bonus so it will take some time to get used to the new handling characteristics.

Aesthetically speaking i also wanted coilovers bc the look of a lowered wrx/sti is nice, but after seeing how my car looks on the yellows i am very happy. It isnt overly showy of flashy i dont think ppl would notice it was lowered if they were not familiar with the car. Also nice to be able to pull into and leave places without worrying about scrapping.

Just wanted to share the my opinion on here in case someone is on the fence like i was. P.S. the price for springs struts and sway bars was the same as a cheap set of coilovers, thanks to BMS for the hookups.

Here is a pic when i picked it up. will get the alignment after a couple weeks.

Looking good! This is a setup i'm thinking of getting for my STi so it's good to hear that you like the yellows. A few questions for you though... what sways did you go with? Also do you think the 22/22 combo is good or if you had the chance would you put a 24 up front at all? Also, what kind of wheel gap measurements do you have now?

I'm considering the whiteline 24f/22r combo with either RCE yellows or Swift Spec-R and i'm going to see how they feel on the stock struts for now.

Thanks!

The perrin 22 mm bars front and rear feel great. I went with the same front and rear bc I wanted as close to neutral as possible and I was concerned about understeering. I read after the fact that a 24 really won't add understeer so who knows. But I don't regret it.

It seems to be about an inch front and back wheel gap I can easily get two finger up front front and two fingers are a little tighter in back ( hehe ). It lowered the car about .75" front and rear but it might settle down some more.

I can't speak for how these springs would react on factory struts but they are very smooth on the koni's. I was on the fence between these and regular guy springs from RCE glad I went with the yellows bc I don't think those would have been stiff enough for my tastes.

Awesome. I am having to same issue. I want to go low.

can't afford coilovers and wasn't sure if springs are gonna be enough.

but it looks like I'll go with springs soon.

yeah as far as springs go rce lower the least, but are some of the stiffest (yellows anyway).

Epic springs will lower a little more than this .4/.2" f/r more than mine and be softer so they will work well with factory struts.

King makes stock height springs with stiffer rates.

I have the same setup on my '11, except whiteline 24f/22r. It's an awesome setup for DD and for Auto-X. I instantly noticed a difference driving back from my mechanic. The car felt (and still feels) much more stable and planted.

Once you get used to the Konis and how they ride, you should try to play around with the dampers a little. I'm currently at about 1 1/4 turn in the front and 1 turn in the rear (less turns to full stiff), but now that its winter I may back them back down to full soft.

The RCEs won't drop much lower. Mine have been on for the last 7 or 8 months and they only settled slightly.

Are the springs the only thing that adjusted the height? I'm looking to get about the same height as that. Are your supporting mods with the springs required or just highly recommended? Car looks great btw!

Did you use your stock struts? Not sure if this is true or not but I hear if you use 08-10 wrx struts with the koni inserts, you get a bit lower.

yes the rce yellow springs would wear out the factory struts quickly. the blacks froms rce dont require new struts. they are about 100 ft/lbs less sprung than the yellows i believe.

Gibbo the 08-10 struts bc of the widebody in newer models and non widebody in the older ones will add more negative chamber to the fronts. The car doesnt have much chamber so it is an added bonus. I didnt want to chop up my struts i wanted a fall back suspension so i bought new struts from fred beans here for an 08 and cut apart brand new ones haha

I can see the chamber though in the front so money well spent. I still am waiting to align it.

I'm currently in the springs vs coilovers dilemma ... The RCE yellows and d specs were the setup I was looking at for struts & springs. But at $800 for the struts and $350 for the springs ... I would spend the same on some fortune auto 500 coilovers.

Plus, the front wheel gap left even with RCE yellows would drive me nuts.

They probably feel really solid though.

Coilovers that cost less than RCE/D-Specs really aren't worth it.

Have you looked at the fortune auto dyno graphs? Or looked into them at all?

Okay, *those* might be worth it but something has to be missing at that price point.

yeah...aint no way a junk ass set of coil overs is gonna last...aint happenin

spending less than ~$2k on coilovers is $$$ flushed

and most dont understand that MOST coilovers need to be rebuilt every year or so or they are gonna be worn out

my dspecs now have almost 100k and 6 years on them and they are still good...try that with junk coilovers
