My coolant level looks like yours when cool but right at the full line when hot. I am at 5100 miles.

Mine looks like that when my engine is cold too. I always check my fluids when my engine is cold (mainly because it's easier to read the oil dipstick), so I'm not sure where the coolant level is when it's hot.

OK, I just checked mine after driving home from work. When the engine is hot, my coolant level falls perfectly on the FULL line. So what you showed in your picture is my cold level, and the FULL line is my hot level.

Right after driving home from work, I had a look and my coolant is over the full mark. It basically is level with the top of the "FULL" lettering.

Is this with the engine cold? (Like first thing in the morning cold?)

I am in the "it still has plenty of coolant if the heater is working" school of thought about this.

Does anyone know what could cause the smell of antifreeze that isn't antifreeze? I smell it all the time, but after the car is warmed up the coolant is always at the full mark, right on.

Might be cosmoline. Used to be a popular topic that was posted about even pre USDM arrival of the WRX back in the 2.5rs days. It was a coating on the engine that smelled unique.

Well, I finally brought my car in to check on this issue. My car has lost the amount of coolant represented by the full and low marks (confirmed when cold or hot) In a Span pf about 400i. They ran a pressure test and also shows me a full visual inspection including having the car on the lift and taking th undercover off. Sigh. At lest they did it all with good faith diligence. Guess they will too it off and I'm glad it's in the system for now in case this gets worse as time goes on.

I wonder if it would be worth submitting an oil sample for a Used Oil Analysis, to see if there's coolant in your oil.

Hmmmm. Interesting suggestion. If this persists I may do that. Ill be changing my oil in the next couple of weeks and see I'd anything is notable by eye. I did have a head gasket leak on an old car way back when where that was happening.

Just an FYI if you decide to pursue this further, you can order a free UOA kit from Blackstone Labs, and only pay if you decide to send in a sample. You might want to order the kit now so that you'll have it in a couple of weeks, if you want to use it.

It's been almost a year, what's the latest?

lets talk variables:
was your coolant level at full the day you picked up car?
did your stealership properly top off all fluids?
have you noticed any coolant on the ground?
what are your driving conditions?
have you found waldo?

update for me:

when i had the dealer look at my car in Dec 2012, they couldn't find anything and the tech IMHO was thorough. he topped it off.

since then, it has shown close to full when hot. i would say it has dropped about 1-2" in about 9000 miles and 11 months, since then, and i still occasionally smell coolant, but the smell isn't as strong as it used to be.

If i worked at a dealership I would probably say its hot where you live or some such. I would top off the fluid when cold to the fill mark. Then get a notebook and record the levels you see weekly on the same surface that way you can track how much you are losing. Then with this data in hand schedule a visit to the dealership. measuring tape should be adequate for measuring levels of fluid while cold. thats my 2 cents

Glad I found this thread, my '13 Impreza Sport has had an odor or coolant from week 1. I've had the car since Aug 22nd and have just under 10k miles on it and the coolant shows low all of the time. I work out of the area so I haven't had time to get it to the dealership to ask them about it.

I never looked at the level when I bought my car 21 months and 34k+ miles ago but just checked and this is where it's at an hour after driving:

I have noticed a coolant smell in my 13, has happened a few times over the past couple of months. Usually right after it warms up, smells for a minute or two then goes away. No wet spots in the driveway or my parking space at work. As far as coolant loss, I've always used a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water, I get it from our 250 GPD RO plant in our humidor that supplies distilled water to our 24 stulz humidifiers. The antifreeze generally does not evaporate but the water in the mix will, the holding or expansion tank is open to atmosphere.
When I was in the Navy I would go out on 3 month patrols [submarine service] and leave my van parked in a barn at our chief missile techs farm outside groton, once I got back the coolant in the reservoir would be dark green and almost pure prestone antifreeze green. I never worried about it as I would flush n change it every year at the auto hobby shop as part of my PMCS routine.
I'm taking it in to the dealer for an oil change and tire rotation next week sometime and to get the rear passenger seatbelt fixed, sometimes it won't release from it's retracted position to put it on, only comes out about a foot or two. I'll log the coolant smell with them then.

I am loosing some coolant too.

I added 9 FL. OZ of coolant at 9000 miles, and then another 7 FL. OZ at 15000 miles.

I do not see any leaks, but I do see some white “frosting” on the thin over flow rubber hose that enters the top of the coolant reservoir tank.

I've recently noticed mine is about 1/2" or more below the low line when cold, and maybe 1/2" above the low line when hot. I have about 15000 miles on it and it's about 10 months old.

I park on grass and haven't noticed any big dead spots. I honestly can't say what the level was like when it was new, but I don't think it was below the low line when cold. I'm not overly concerned about it, but I am going to add a little.

Have not checked my coolant level regularly, but checked it today cold and it is almost a full inch under the minimum level line. Car has 26,500 miles on it. Ever since my car has started to consume more oil I have noticed a oily/coolant like smell in my garage, or after the car runs for a bit. It is not leaking since there are no stains under my car in the garage.

Is there any possibility oil consumption and coolant consumption could somehow be related?
