I was driving home today and all of a sudden I heard like a metal clang sound and then my car starts squealing. It sounds like metal dragging on metal. It's a nasty screeching noise.
I isolated the noise to the front wheels and it's not transmission or engine either. I rolled the car in neutral and the wheels kept screeching. This is a 2011 WRX sedan with approx 20k miles. Will be going to service tomorrow to get everything checked out. What should I be checking? I'm thinking it's a rock stuck between the brakes and the rotor... hopefully. But what else could it possibly be?

Probably just a rock. I had that happen, but a mile or so later I heard it pop out and all was back to normal.

Yep, sounds like a rock to me too. I had one in there so stuck one time that I couldn't even get it out by bending the shield so I just did up to a 3rd gear pull and it it shot out like a bullet. The noise when it came out was like something out of a movie.
![]() It could also be the shield itself hitting the rotor. This happened to me the first day I bought the car. I had to pull over and push it back with a pen. |

Have you put the car in reverse? I had that happen to me once. Scared the crap out of me, backed into a parking space to look for it. Couldn't find anything. drove away and it was nothing. Driving in reverse dislodged the tiny rock that was stuck.
