Epoxy Experts?

Looking for an epoxy for a little project, needs to be able to adhere aluminum together and withstand oil/fuel and temps up to 600 degree's. Any suggestions?

3M makes some good prudcts There Scoth weld line may have something that will work for you. They had good customer support if you call them as well. They may even toss in a sample. They have a good info on there webpage as well

Whole point is to build an clean enclosure so very few welds and those are only because off the economics of doing a full billet top with threads etc.

I would be hessitant to glue together anything that is subjected to fuel, even with the 3m stuff.

You can always Weld it, grind it, and polish it.

IF you are going to JB weld/epoxy two surfaces together you might want to scuff up both surfaces for better adhesion.

could use devcon F (aluminum putty) or F2 (aluminum liquid) epoxy, has a good oil and gasoline resistance, fair methanol resistance

Machinist wants 50$ per disk to make the caps used to make up each end of the reservoirs, sounds like i need a new machinist!

Also look into both West system epoxy and Pro-set adhesives.

If it was me I wouldnt trust a adhesive past about 400 degrees F. Alot of epoxies arent rated for more than 300 or so degrees. Alot of the time even if the adhesive is rated to a high temperature over time the bond will break due to the different thermal expansion ratios.

If you want to join aluminum that is good to 600 degrees weld or braze it because you dont want fuel to leak at 600 degrees. That is quite the fire hazard.

Epoxies used today in The aerospace industry have been developed for just that - aerospace. With huge temperature changes and strength to weight demands, today's aerospace epoxy offer more solutions than ever before. Are they cheap? No. Do they require special handling and curing techniques? Usually they do. Can you get samples from manufacturers? If you ask nicely. Will it withstand the temperatures I want? Just read the data sheet supplied with each adhesive, some will, some won't.

People continue to perpetuated the misinformation that epoxies and other adhesives are inferior to welding and braising while due to advances in technology within the last 20years the opposite is actually true.

Adhesives offer more control and even more flexibility when used for the proper application - just look at the euro fighter. It's not welded together.

Well I work on aircraft. Yes they use alot of epoxies. Now with that said when epoxies are used they are used with rivets, bolts or screws. I have seen alot of adhesives disbond even with good prep work. Also aircraft are inspected daily and very periodically for structural disbond due to the environment and high performance nature.

In aviation NO ONE would use epoxy to bond aluminum to aluminum to hold fuel to 600 degrees. If you get a leak at 600 degrees there are fuels that will auto ignite at that temperature. Needless to say that isnt safe.

Its not that adhesives couldnt do the job its that welding or brazing is MUCH safer. When it comes to fluids everything in aviation is welded or brazed because it wont leak at extreme temps, high vibration and pressures. Adhesives are not the proper application for fluids especially fuel.
