Default What do you think of "do it yourself garage" in philly area?

Hi all,

I might have an opportunity to rent a 5 bays existing auto repair shop, I'm thinking of converting to "do it yourself type of garage" so people can bring their car to the garage and work on it yourself. and the shop can rent out lift, tools, shop equipment and on site mechanic.

We all know Philadelphia's house garage are small, park a car in and that's about it, you can't really work on your car. Able to use lift can to make life alot easier, especially for us car enthusiast always want to work on our own car.

So just want to throw this idea out there and see what people think?

Thank you for your input.

I think this is a great idea for those of us who have apartments or condos where you arn't allowed to work on your car. the sad thing is many people have projects that could last anywhere from 2hrs to 2 years.

I think it would be better to spend money on a Market report or have a report done to see if there are other people ( not just enthusiasts) who would take advantage of such an establishment.

as a side note there is a gas station near me that rents out bays ( they only Have 3) i personally like the idea ...if the rates are right

We've looked into this before. Start with your insurance policy and let us know how that works out. Once you clear the insurance hurdle, you are home free.

There was a place like this near the college I went to in VT (several decades ago) and I used it all the time. If there was a place like this near me I would be taking advantage of it frequently and I would be happy to pay for a warm, dry, properly equipped place to work on my car. If you do this I might even travel to Philly to visit and take advantage of the shop.

That would be great but like Mike has stated above, Im sure the liability insurance for that is quite substantial.

Yep. Make sure you have a great insurance policy and a well drafted release of liability.

Yes, insurance and release of liability is biggest concerns. I have to talk to my insurance agent this week. Thank you

This idea comes up every so often, you're hardly the first. There's a good reason why you don't see many DIY places, and it's what everyone here has already mentioned. One serious accident could wipe you out without good coverage (or even with it, given the potential lawsuit award). Not to mention the landlord might decline to rent their property for this type of use.
Most likely the insurance quote will stop you in your tracks, and that's if your agent is even willing to offer it to you. But good luck trying, let us know how it goes.

It's a great idea, and I would have loved something like this when I was living in the city with no garage. Unfortunately since it's Philly, someone will drop a wrench on their foot and 50 people will claim they were there (who weren't) and were hurt.

Set up a top of the line video system

I think this would be an awesome idea if you can pull it off. Like others have said, insurance and release of liability would be the big issues. After that, the hourly rates would have to be competitive with labor rates of local shops (otherwise people could just pay someone else to do the work).

Assuming all of this works out, I would definitely make use of this. There have been numerous times when a lift would have made my life 1000x easier

I am gonna say this will not fly. Too much liability that will require you to charge more than anyone is willing to pay. Have you tried to sell anything on Nasioc or other forums, nothing but cheap lowballers. No one would pay a lot to do it. They all say they would but when it comes down to costing them money they will bail.

Obviously certain jobs almost require a lift, so you might get that business, but if the cost is too high you might just pay a professional and be done with it.

The demand might be there, but the cost will put a damper on that demand.

^only thing is if you trust the shop owner then I do think people will pay to be there.

I tried to have a vigil over my car's oil change at pep boys so they don't mess anything up, but they wouldn't even let me into the shop area just to watch/help. Liability...

Dang, I was hoping things might have changed. If it had, I would have tried to do one up here!
