This is what I was originally referring to, sorry Mike. My intent wasn't to make light of the tragedy. There are many things that are currently broken in this country we live in. Banning guns is simply not the solution. Anyone with half a brain could see this as nothing more than a twisted trend. Sick individuals that would have otherwise ended their tortured existence in ignominy have decided to gain notoriety by commiting horrific acts-even if their "fame" is posthumous(sp?). These are ugly symptoms of a society that is ill. Why are there more people suffering from mental illness? Why aren't these people being treated or isolated in the case of those with violent tendencies? What were firearms of any kind doing in a house with a disturbed person living there? I've asked this question at work and was asked if I thought that the mother deserved being the victim of murder. No, I don't but if guns were present there should have been no way this young man could have gained access to them. I do feel that those who suffer from mental illnesses deserve care, but I have experience dealing with relatives with mental problems. What many people don't or will not accept is that most folks with serious mental problems don't get better. Medications help, but do not "fix" these unfortunate people. Too often I've heard the lame excuse of "I just snapped", or "temporary insanity" being used as a defense. Sane people control impulses far more often than they don't. As uncomfortable as it is we all need to examine causes for what's happened. Ask why as opposed to pointing fingers and blaming inanimate objects for horrifying acts.

I can't help but think mental illness and mind/mode altering prescription drugs are the issue. They don't prescribe many "mental health" drugs to people under certain ages (typically 18) because it causes suicidal tendencies. Who's to say it doesn't do that to older folks too it just goes undocumented for some reason. I mean, older people will be more likely to deny thoughts of suicide because they know the implications. Technically, suicide and murder are the same. They often go hand in hand. You're killing someone whether it's yourself or someone else or both.

I'm not either Bob but the article makes good points. I don't think any new gun ban laws are going to solve this issue but that is exactly what it appears is going to happen. I like the NRA idea to put armed officers at each school too.

Nomad, I agree with you on the national service thing. I wrote a paper about that for an English class at Uaa, I think it would solve a lot of different problems within our country.

This was a terrible tragedy for those children, the families affected, and the nation hurts for the victims. However I think it was a set up. Even if it wasn't, it's just one move closer for big brother on check mating the second amendment. The punishment should come to the pharmaceutical companies. They poison the sheep with pills. I'm depressed there's a drug for that. I can't sleep there's a drug for that. I'm too hyper there's a drug for that. Its all about the dollar to them and it's all about control to uncle Sam. Why don't they just legalize pot? I've never met a depressed, hyperactive, insomniac stoner have you? I'm just so god damn tired of the government trying to capitalize on events like these. 9/11 brought the tsa Nazis, department of homeland security(what a ****ing joke) and the patriot act. It's all moving parts of the machine. Massacre at the batman movie, Clinton pushes UN gun ban, Obama reelected, nbc sports caster pushes strict gun control after murder/suicide, mall shooting in Oregon, now sandy hook. You can call me a "whacky conspiracy theorist" but all these events fall into place way to easily and timely for big brother.

And I firmly disagree with putting guards in schools. If teachers choose to be certified and trained in cc they should be allowed. But more police is not the answer. Let the people police the people. Everyone wants to be taken care of by someone else. There is no accountability in this country anymore. We are blessed to live in a state where we can carry nearly anywhere with no certification required. I feel safe living here not only because I can carry but because I know many others carry as well. If someone tried something like the batman shooting here he probably would have been stopped before his first magazine was empty.
