No they don't. No car company has made as much positive progress in as short a period of time as Hyundai/Kia. If I was willling to drive a sedan, I'd seriously consider the Optima.

To each his own. My mom just got rid of her hyundai. She loved it. I hated that car.
It didn't burn any oil though.

so back to oil, I was doing some shopping yesterday and noticed that my walmart doesn't carry any 5qt jugs of 0w20. They only have one brand and that's M1. 5qt jugs of 0w30 were 24.99. Next oil change I'm gonna run the m1 0w30 just becase its way more affordable.
Currently a little over 200 miles on the Castrol Edge 0w20.

And I looked a minute ago at break, and my drivers side intake cam position sensor cover has a samall amount of oily residue on it, the other three look totally clean. It desnt appear to be the culprit, as there isn't any evidence of oil anywhere else. Well, all four of the fuel injectors are coated in a light oily film. My cam sensor seal may be bad though, but it doesn't look near as bad as the pics on the last page.

Jrobb, djbono, and others- are you seeing any oily residue on any parts under the hood?

Not sure if this is relevant to your plight, but here's something I came across in another sub-forum on this site. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2444556

For those of you with oil consumption issues, and for those of you who who have used or are currently using Mobil1, check out this thread (and don't miss the interesting nugget of information in post #9):

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2444194

I know it's a different model of Subie, using a different weight of oil, but I thought you guys with oil consumption issues might be interested anyway.

The same thread that I linked to above provided a link to this information from Amsoil that you guys might find interesting:

Well auskip hasn't reported any oil consumption and he's supposedo be running M1.
I know my car, and I'm sure almost all the others burning oil, burns Subaru/Idemitsu 0w20. My car also burns Castrol Syntec/Edge 5w30.
At this point, I have to rule out weights/brands, and me and a couple others seem to burn whatever oil is in there.
If it weren't a "total loss" oiling system, I'd be running Amsoil, no question about it.

When you have a chance, read the PDF at the Amsoil link above. It pretty much explains all of the causes of oil consumption.

Here's a thread from Newbies & Faq's. It has several posts by oil burners who haven't posted here, and since most are/were "newbies" their data also isn't in the poll.

Steve, you're a stand-up guy, no doubt about that.
But if amsoil were the band-aid/answer for our oil consumption, Jrobb wouldn't have burnt it.
I've read that pdf before, though. Good read, but to be honest, I'm just sick of reading about oils. I've had plenty of crappy cars never burn any.
If this were some specialized niche market car, I could see needing some special oil. But these cars are sold to joe average consumer and really shouldn't be fussy. I'm trying my third type of oil atm. But with as many folks from different regions, demographics, etc, I just don't think the brand or weight of the oil is to blame.

I've tried Subaru oil, M1 and Amsoil OE 0W20. My engine burns them all. As a matter of fact, when my engine was consuming the worst at the end of the summer, I was running the Amsoil.

And if I haven't said it yet-
Thanks, Steve, for being a friendly, helpful kind of guy. And thanks especially for keeping me reminded that VW sucks! Truly, if it weren't for you I may have given upo and traded for a VW. You see, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool sucker for VW's. But I said my farewells to them after my 2002 GTI. Tranny was garbage, and the quality just sucked. My 96 and 97 Jettas were ok, but power windows consatantly broke, and they just didn't hold up well. Although, I still have BOTH free bikes I got from VW with the "Jetta Trek" package. Good solid bikes, still going long after the cars!
Anyhow, thanks!

I just gave away my Trek 930 that came with my 96 Jetta Trek. That car was one of the worst I ever owned. All VWs should come with a bike so that you have a way to get around when your car is in the shop. I got rid of that pig with 16k miles on it. Im sure it has long since been in the junk yard.

Also a big thanks to Jrobb, and others, as well. I hate that you're all having this issue, but goddamn I'd really hate it if I were truly the only one. The stress of the situation has gotten the better of me at times, and hearing from others that have had the same experience makes it easier somehow. If soa or a dealer would fix this or give me a different car...
Ahhh well I can dream, but in the meantime, I'm gonna crack open some PBR's and go take another look at that right intake cam sensor cover. And the injectors.

Ok. I reported that the oil light was on dimly in my car last week (red light). Last nite, the amber colored oil light came on. I stopped by a Subaru dealership I was near this morning, and explained the situation. The first thing the advisor said was "Well, did you check the oil?". I told him I had and that it was right between the two marks. I asked him if that was considered low, and he made up something because basically he didn't know. I asked him how much oil is acceptable to burn per Subaru. Of course he didn't know. He checked my oil and said it was below the bottom mark and low. When he realized I knew what I was talking about, he quickly admitted he was new to Subaru and got me the other advisor.

I explained the two lights to him and told him that I had the oil changed at 3,000,and 7,500 (currently at 13,600) per Subaru guidelines. Told me I should check the oil every fill up, Its ok to use quart every 1,000 miles, I should carry oil in my car at all times, its my responsibility to make sure I have oil in my car, that I should be getting oil changes every 5k miles, asked me if I had ever owned a car with a boxer engine blah blah blah. He checked my oil and it was right in the middles of the two marks. This guy seemed surprised and would not say if it was low or not when I asked him. He did put a half quart in though.

He did say that the red light sounds like an electrical problem with the sensor. I told him that was comforting since I am driving the only car out of my last 30 cars that burned oil. I pointed out that this car probably burns as much oil as my 67 Beetle with 268k miles on it drops on the ground. He told me that Subaru prefers to use the term "comsume" as opposed to "burn". I asked where it was going since it was not on the ground if it was not getting burned.

I have alot going on right now, and did not have time to leave it. I did tell them though that i have had many cars, and many of those had longer OCI than this car and they did not "consume" any noticible and certainly not any significant amount of oil.

When I left, i looked at the service advisor and told him that Subaru should start marketing the Impreza as getting 50 mpg.......... of oil. He laughed.

Pretty much I have never owned a car that had vanishing oil. I don't intend to drive one now.

Has anyone that owns an oil burner tried switching to non-synthetic oil?

It should probably be done by someone who is out of warranty, since Subaru could technically deny warranty work because they recommend synthetic oil in the owner's manual.

I'm with everyone else here though... I've owned a LOT of cars, and besides my old beaters from the '70s, not one of them has burned oil.

I'll be keeping a close on my new Impreza. I just got rid of a 2012 Focus, after owning it for a year, 'cause it was driving me nuts. I don't need the Impreza to do the same.

If you are following the recommended OCI, you will most likely see these lights come on unless you add oil. Apparently the red light coming on dimly is a sign of an electrical problem per two different Subaru dealers (which I tend to believe since my red light goes out when you turn the headlights off and back on when you turn them on). My guess is if you are following the 7,500 mile OCI the lights will start coming on somewhere within the last 1,500 miles of your 7,500 mile interval.

I had been following this closely, hoping this oil light issue would not surface, but it did.

Sounds very familiar, BretAZ.
Rememo- that is exactly what came to mind when I learned that my car was BURNING oil, "this isn't a Vega!".

After looking under the hood, I only see a bt of residue all on the bodies of the injectors, and a light amount around the circumference of the intake cam position sensor on the drivers side.
Tapped the bugs out of my air filter, I think I'll see how a Fram or other cheapo air filter fits this time around.
Oh, and I checked my tire pressures and coolant. Its lost about an inch of coolant in 3000 miles, that's checking it hot and cold.

Currently a little over 200 miles on the Castrol Edge 0w20.
If you want 0w20, you could try another walmart... some do carry it. (You can check on walmart.com)

For the record, btw, with almost 7,500 miles on my mobil 1 0w20 fill, I have burned maybe half a quart. The level is down a bit, but the light hasn't come on. So I'm burning less on mobil 1 than I did on the factory fill, for whatever that's worth.
