I'm having a problem filling the gas tank (tried several different gas station to make sure it wasn't a bad pump at the station) - the nozzle shuts off over and over and over - making it take forever to fill the tank. Start up is fine. Would removing the purge valve correct this?

05 STi, stage 2.

I dont think it could be the purge valve. It sounds like something is clogging or restricting your filler neck. Or possibly something around the charcoal canister.

This is a bit confusing. On some cars, the bottom hose from the solenoid goes to the intake manifold, however it's reversed for others. What are the symptoms that the hose is on the wrong nipple?

Update: Sent someone over to one of the gas stations to fill his truck and he had the same issue. When I was filling up the other day, I was paying attention to other people at the same station and noticed they were having the same issue. These are at local Shell stations....maybe the pumps are a bit sensitive?
Sorry to get OT, but wanted to give update.

looks to be correct. I just installed a JDM unit with JDM hoses this past weekend on a 2002 US WRX and routed it the same way.

I did mine last night and had the hose coming from the gas tank going into the nipple with the arrow (was the nipple on the outer edge of the pcs for an 05 STi) - which left the hose that is connected to the intake manifold in its original position.

Car runs soooo much better after doing this. I was having a bad idle problem guess all the old hoses had cracks and was causing vacuum leaks.

Bump for updates. I have mine routed as stated in post 108 and grinch has his routed as shown in post 105. Which hose connects to the arrow? Is mine reversed? Is the purge valve to add pressure to the tank or vacuum on the fuel tank (I would imagine the later)?

Thanks!

Hopefully this image will help clarify things for 2002-2004 WRX owners. This is a JDM ver7 evap purge solenoid with the OEM JDM hoses attached. It is different on 2.5L models.

Simply mimic this image and then cap off the 2 unused ports (turbo inlet, intake manifold) and you are done. The image on post #1 does not depict it this way, so I'm not sure if that is a mistake in the OE manual.

Thank you IA P! I can't see the arrow in the image. Do you remember which port had the arrow?

I do not recall which had the arrow. This particular unit was installed in a customer's car a few weeks back so I do not have it to reference. If I were you I would run out to my car and look to see which nipple has which hose. The 02-05 WRX were all the same. I want to say my 08 FXT is also the same, leading me to believe the 02-07 WRX were setup the same way.

Furthest nipple from the electrical connector = goes to intake manifold
Closest nipple from the electrical connector = goes to return hose back to gas tank

My purge control is just like grinch's. I do have my hoses the opposite of his though thinking that the arrow indicates flow direction.....meaning from fuel tank to valve to intake. Sorry, not trying to be slow here.

I'm working on some manuals now for a whole new Thread. The new thread will start with several factual posts to help clear up the Evap Purge dilemma that many have run into. I, like many, am finding there are vast differences out there between models and figured a central learning thread would be best.

Details to follow once it is listed. Here is direction that I've started with (rough draft):

I flipped through a few manuals and came up with the following diagrams that correspond accordingly:

2002 WRX = Diag A
2003 WRX = Diag A
2004 WRX = Diag A
2005 WRX
2006 WRX = Diag B
2007 WRX

2004 STi = Diag B
2005 STi
2006 STi = Diag B
2007 STi

Thank you Stephen! I think what caused the confusion is that they flipped the pcs ports.

Ed05WRX- would you happen to know which Diagram matches your factory system before setting it up the JDM way? Please see post 115. My guess is your 05 WRX best matches Diag A, but please let me know and I'll try to better assist with the rough idle.

This is what I did, because my purge valve broke and don't wanna spend 150 for a piece of plastic.

so did your factory system look like Diag A or B in post 115 before the work?

Also, did the electronic purge valve break or the diaphram thing that is round in shape?

Diaphragm B looks like my old set up but don't remember very well. The round piece purge valve, not the soleniod piece.

Once it fills up and I start driving it runs and turns on nicely, but every time I fill up and turn the car on it kinda acts like it doesn't want to turn on and after a 2second or so it turns on and idles real weird and sounds like it wants to die.

oh yea i have a 2004 wrx too. forgot to mention that

i am having the same idle issue that ed05wrx is having after doing this. driving around is fine but if i am just idling it starts to idle like it wants to stall out and the lights will dime in and out as the idle slows/goes way down.

i have it set up like diagram A right now with the plug closest to the sensor going under the intake mani and the plug furthest away from the sensor going up to the nipple pointing down.

but before i did this it was set up opposite like diagram B. the plug closest to the sensor went up to the nipple pointing down and the one further away going under the intake mani

I don't know if this could be the reason for the rough idle or maybe my battery is on its way out but you seem to know way more about this than i do so any help would be great! but either way my check engine light did turn off! which i am greatful for.

thanks!

WRXFTW02- The 02 WRX should be setup like Diagram A. If you were to make it like the JDM car then:
- Keep hose showing in FU0002
- Remove everything shown in FU0365
- Replace the removed parts with a new hose that connects from the solenoid to the metal fuel rail line.

The end result should be something that looks like the image in post 111. Are there any check engine lights?
