Being a student and not having a lot of money while rebuilding the motor and throwing on a 30r doesn't make any sense. It also seems you haven't factored in the supporting mods. What happens if it blows again? If I were you, I would just get it working first, finish school and get a job then go nuts.
Of course this is only my opinion.

i am a student, also work at a very sturdy job, but i do not make enough money to do it this month or prob even next month
lol i already have a p&l 30r rotated kit with evrything, i have 1000cc injectors, fmic, already have fuel pump installed, already have exhaust, headers, ex waste gate with correct piping, ebcs, tgv deletes, **** i even got fuel rails, accesport if i go that route with tuning, i am missing fuel lines and a 90 degree elbow for the fmic to turbo, and i think some stuff to relocate my coolant tank, im sure i have a more stuff i forgot about i think their is enough supporting mods ? i already have cluth installed that can take 450 tourque i dont wanna fix it, then pay again to install all that might as well be patient and build it for that oh and i got myself a new daily -- 95 legacy ls wagon lol its ugly tho |

I recommend Jeremy at DJ's Performance. He built me a new STi short block with new OEM STi nitrided crank, CP forged pistons (99.5mm, 8.2:1 CR), King bearings, reconditioned STi rods, ARP rod bolts for SUPER cheap (under $2,500). Also the cylinders were honed with torque plates which to me is a big deal if you are going forged and don't want to use a quart of oil every 1,500 miles. Send him a PM.

^^ (My experiences/ opinions may vary from yours..) Torque plate honing isn't really necessary in these motors if you have a decent machinist. If you look at where the heads bolt in on some motors, they bolt right through the cylinder wall area which causes distortion upon torquing the cyl heads. This isn't the case on Subaru motors at all...look at where the head bolts run in relation to the bores. Someone got a hard on for torque plate honing these motors years ago and it stuck. I think people's oil consumption experiences are just from a crappy bore and hone job, crappy piston rings, not cleaning the bores well enough before installation, rather than not being torque plate honed. FWIW, I run wiseco's that are large enough in the bores that it sounds like a TDI when cold, and this motor uses NO, NONE, ABSOLUTELY ZILCH oil between changes, 5-7k mile interval. I also don't use mobil 1. And this motor has about 40k of downright red headed stepchild abuse on it. It probably sees fuel cut 5-10 times daily, 19psi. I just wanted to say it because if you have a machinist that you trust and they don't have ability to torque plate hone, you don't need it. If it's available and they don't charge you too much for it, go ahead if it makes you feel better. =) Good luck with the motor building/finding OP! |

I just had to jump in to say something about Flat Irons Tuning. They are related to Flat Irons Subaru/Acura/Hyundai in Boulder Colorado. This is where I take my car for service. The dealership is awesome and I have heard nothing but good things about Flat Irons Tuning as well (a few of my coworkers buy parts from here frequently). Just figured I would throw this in for anyone interested.
