Cleaned the car and borrowed my Dad's lens to see what kind of fixed prime lens I want to get. I think the 85mm is good for portraits but its a bit too much for what I am looking at. Probably a 45mm would be perfect... Also shot with his camera so the focus was a bit different than what I was hoping for one some of the shots. Anyway, here are the decent ones:

Thanks!
Yah, I am looking at something like this: Seems pretty reasonably priced for the quality of lens (and it being Nikon) |

You think it would be okay for portrait shooting too, or would an 85mm be better for that? Looking to have kids soon so trying to do what's best for both, haha. I still think the 50mm above but I got lots to learn and only used this for the first time today.

85mm is better for portraits and usually offers better depth of field as you'll have to be a little bit further from the subject

those two would be your best bets for portaiture, fixed focal length... obv the 50mm you can get closer but slightly less DOF.. but im gonna guess the factory 85mm f/1.4 costs a lot more than the 50mm. you can google those lenses and see examples...
