yeah that sounds like everything is good!
Putting in just over 5 quarts puts me 3/16 or so over "full".

Glad you did it yourself??
Imagine taking it in to a dealer and leaving with 6+ quarts and oil spilled all over the engine....

no regrets yet. I ended up using ramps which made it easier.

I made some ramps at work. They are definitely needed.

79, since you seem to have tools to work on cars, do you have a compression or leak down tester that you can use? I am REALLY curious to know what the root cause could possibly be.

I personally dont but yeah I have access to everything. Finding the time to do it is a bit tricky but I'm getting a shop manual for the car and depending on how the plugs look at 25k miles and if oil re-pools around the cam position sensor cover. Honestly SOA or a dealer should be going through all this hassle, though. Not me. I bought a brand new car.

True, but you seem to be reluctant to deal with the dealer for things. That said, I would do it yourself in your free time if possible. Data points as a result of these tests should be pretty important.

for me, just driving onto a pair of 2x6s was enough. (ie, 1.625" gave me enough clearance to get to the drainplug easily...amazing what just a little more height allows)

Yeah.
I Have used some 2x10's before but the ramps are steel versions of rhino ramps i sorta copied.
You are quite right though. The average owner could just fold the rear seats down and head to home depot and have some boards cut down to size. An inch or so is a big improvement and makes it doable.
But I do love having the extra six or so inches of clearance. I tidy up the underside as best I can while the oil drains.

I will get it done one way or another in the summertime. Data IS good!
If I pull the plugs, and there are any red flags, I'll likely put new ones in and take the car and the plugs to a dealer in another county. Somewhere that deals in high volume.
Until then, just watching the dipstick and that cam sensor seal.
And the injectors. Cant figure out why they would be oily (slighly) and nothing around them is.

Could be leaky o rings. Fuel does leave an oily residue

What's your oil consumption?
According to wikipedia, it appears that Subaru expects 1 quart every 1200 miles to be normal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...baru_FB_engine

"The FB has a 10% increase in gas mileage with the power coming on sooner and the torque band being broader. Despite these advances compared to the EJ series, it is common and expected for these engines to consume up to a quart of oil every 1200 miles."

that just sounds like a CYA statement that subaru is putting out there.

I don't think Subaru authored that content. Regardless, I went into Wikipedia's editing mode and deleted that last sentence because it's untrue. It's not "expected" that the FB engine consume 1 qt of oil every 1200 miles. Some of them do so, but it's not expected, and I doubt that Subaru would claim that oil consumption is an expectation.

Oil consumption was an expectation with Mazda's rotary engine. It's not an expectation with the Subaru FB engine.

wikipedia allows anyone to edit it, so take that with a grain of salt. Or two grains.

Actually it looks like that final sentence has already been removed from the site.

For all you know, someone here added that passage. Most people here do not have cars consuming oil.

I don't know who added that passage (it wasn't cited), but I'm the one who removed it.

perhaps not. similar things have happened in the past though.

either way I wasn't referring to the wiki article exactly but subaru does say something similar in the official literature which is what inspired it. the use of the word "expected" is probably incorrect as was mentioned though.

The measuring of the oil every other day reveals that my oil consumption problem appears to be fixed! I am doing my 23K oil change in the morning, and it will be to the engine wash after that, since my dealer did not even clean the oil my camshaft sensors where leaking. Since they did not change the oil after replacing the sensors, all they did is fill up a little over the second line. It has not consumed oil. At least it appears to be a lot better than before. I will keep the board posted.

Wekcome to the discussion, but yeah thats all been discussed ad infinitum. I'm currently burning quart in roughly 1700 miles. A certain new model of subaru/toyota is actually "allowed" to burn 1.1 quarts in 600 miles!!!! Cya lawyer statements.
Whoever wrote that wiki stuff shoukd edit it to say that oil consumption of up to 1.1 quarts in 1200 miles is considered to be acceptable to Subaru. Thats the TRUTH!!!!

Not about 2012's, but heres a more typical oil consumrption discussion. Less fanfare that on a manufacturer specific site. More or less shows the general feeling automotive forums typically show about the subject.
