Figured it was about time to post a build thread about this instead of just lurking so here goes:
The car in question started life as a 1996 Impreza with no abs, no power windows or locks, the perfect template to start with (if only it was OBD-I but I digress). ![]() We were fortunate enough to pick up an example without any rust and after giving it a once over began tearing stuff off starting with the engine and transmission (after throwing it on the scales and weighing it in at 27xxlbs) ![]() Then it was time for the interior, with the "everything must go" approach carrying through the majority of the interior components except for the headliner and door cards ![]() We also went through (and when I say we it was more Jon Krolewicz's expert dry icing skills but again I digress) and took out roughly 55 pounds of sound deadening from the interior of the car ![]() and now that the car is fully stripped, it was time to send it off to paint ![]()

Now with the shell of at paint, it came time to arrange all of the running gear and other parts. For that we look to one of our donor cars, my old 07 2.5i that came to an untimely demise, but also had an EZ30 swap in its heyday. While the engine had already been removed, it came time to relieve it of its Bilstein PSS9s, 4pot/2pots, Haltech and ABS system
![]() With that being said, we salvaged the entire rear subframe from the 07, and the sway bars on top of what was already listed. It also became time to dig into what would be powering the project, an EZ30D lifted from an 01 Outback L.L. Bean ![]() The motor wasn't left stock, though it was an insane build. We got some .50 over pistons from Subaru, some SuperTech valve springs and decked the head to increase the H6s output (which we'll get to in a bit). ![]() Shortly after digging into the motor, the car came back from paint! The color is bizarre in that its Chrysler Sunburst Orange (off of the uber awesome Dodge Caliber ), but because the painter shot the car with a black base coat and Chrysler uses a base coat the same color as the top layer, it turned out different. The black coat actually was a move made out of necessity, as the paint was so thin that over a gallon of it was used shooting the engine bay before the painter realized it needed to be shot black first. The results are pretty cool though, the paint turns different colors depending on lighting, from brown to blood orange to metallic orange (but you'll see that in some of the later shots)![]() Last edited by Donutz; 01-17-2013 at 11:34 AM. |

I get this warm, fuzzy feeling every time I see an H6 swap.

Definitely interested to read more. I have two EZ30s sitting in my garage, and will probably be proceding with installing the EZ30D in the coming months.

Keep the updates coming!!!!
Please include ample details about attaching the EZ30D to a 5MT, if that was your plan. That's one thing I'm very interested in due to its potential relevance hahaha. It also seems to be something that very few people do/have documented. |
