Of course you will take a hit, but its not as bad as other cars.

Ive heard of people with wrx's actually making money after driving for a year because demand is so high for the wrx's (granted it was not sold to a subaru dealer) but that doesnt help you.

the best thing you can do is find a car you do like and find out if its worth taking the hit.

n00b, which car will you be trading to that will solve all these problems?

There are threads with solutions to most of your concerns.

Are the hills in your area so steep that you're routinely winding the engine to 5K+?

Motor Trend says the FB20 Impreza is quicker than the EJ25. It's only slower if you shift too early.

a short shifter is cheap and easy and makes the throws perfect

1. The quality of the interior is cheap. Everything is starting to rattle more and more every day. I have had numerous dash board rattles addressed by the dealer and had everything taped with foam and it still rattles. The area by the heater controls rattles like a bunch of loose change anytime the engine is running. I would turn the radio up but when I do the doors buzz and rattle also.

2. Gas mileage is not really any better than my 06 Impreza.

3. The throws for the gears are too long...making driving the MT a not so enjoyable experience. The hill holder clutch is annoying....I turned it off but then there is a horrible yellow light in the dashboard ruining a rather nice red display.

4. The seat squeak is getting worse and worse. Brought into the dealer to have them check and of course the noise couldn't be replicated.

5. The engine is just too underpowered. Unfortunately I wasn't able to test drive the car before I bought it. I was one of the many who had to wait 8 weeks before I got my car. I live in a really hilly area and this car just doesn't have enough power. My 06 impreza had a little more power and torque and didn't seem to have as many issues.

These are just a few of the issues I have with this car. It has 10k miles on it and I've only had it for about 8 months now. Just very dissapointed overall.
I completely understand where you're coming from. It doesn't matter how well a car is praised or how positive the reviews are or even how many people love it, if you're unhappy with it, no one is gonna change your mind. There will be plenty of people who will try to change your mind, especially here on a Subaru forum, but go with your gut.

If you are disappointed with the car, your best bet is to test drive other vehicles until you find something you know you're gonna like and get rid of the Impreza. The alternative is keeping the Impreza and being miserable every time you get behind the wheel.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I'm also disappointed with my Impreza, but unfortunately, I'm not in any position to get another vehicle. I keep trying to like it and hope that someday I will, but I just don't see that happening. Trust me, you'll be much happier moving on to greener pastures.

I had an '05 STi, the interior was no-so nice in that. My '08 STI is a bit better than my '05, but I wasn't too happy with all the hard plastic around. It made the car feel a bit cheap. While the '12 Impreza isn't luxury quality, it is an improvement over both my other Subarus. A step in the right direction!

I'm not too sure about the car i would want to trade it in for. I have been dying for a diesel car for the longest time but all the talk about the HPFP problems with VW Tdi's have turned me away. I would honestly be content with the vehicle if the rattles would just go away. It just makes the car so damn undriveable .

I'm not very good mechanically. Mostly because I'm afraid I will break all the plastic to get the center console off the even install the short throw shifter. Would this be something a dealer could install? I would think they would have an issue with that...unless of course subaru offers a short throw shifter.

Get the service manual PDF from ebay. It shows how the entire dash comes apart so you don't have to guess and risk breaking something.

Remove everything you can until the rattles go away.

Line the mating surfaces of panels with foam weather stripping and wrap wires with foam or cloth tape. Reinstall a single piece, test drive, repeat.

They do, but it is like 250 for just the part. The shifter is very easy to install, there are plenty of videos on YouTube to help you build confidence. The wrx is very close, we just have 1 extra step.

The dealer I'm sure won't install aftermarket though, but you could probably find a mechanic or another forum member to do it

If you want to trade it, trade it. You will take a small hit (mostly depreciation, and registration fees), but not much -- I bet the resale value is very high since many people wanting the car are waiting months to get one.

Any dealer, subaru or other, would love to take it in trade because they can resell it easily. I bet you could even find a subaru dealer that would trade you back into the previous generation Impreza for no loss, in a heartbeat, since most of the previous generation Impreza owners would love the upgrade to the new version.

I don't know why anyone would care enough, even on a subaru forum, to try and make you change your mind about trading it. That seems a bit silly.

Do the math, if you think you would be better off with another car, get it. If you think it would be too expensive to trade, then drive it and accept what you have, a practically new car most people would love to have, rattles or not.

If you're going to trade the car into a dealership (regardless of brand), you're going to take a big hit financially. Dealerships often make more money selling used cars than new cars because a high-demand used car is difficult for consumers to find, so the dealership can sell it for a high price without competing against other dealerships. The dealership wants as much profit as possible (of course), so their objective is to give you as little as possible on trade, and then flip the car for as much as possible.

When I was buying my Impreza, I gave the Subaru dealership the opportunity to take my pristine 2010 Golf TDI in trade. They offered $16.5k, and wouldn't go any higher. I sold the TDI myself for $22k.

So if you don't want to take a financial beating, you're going to have to sell the Impreza yourself. Trading it in will cost you dearly. As Zeeper said, the Impreza is a desirable car, so it will be easy for you to sell it for much more than you'll get in trade (especially living in a cold-weather climate like MA).

Unless the dealer wants to do a little trading, as in trade the newer impreza for a less desirable (from their perspective) previous generation impreza. Because if they have a car on their lot that is harder to sell, and can put a car on their lot that is easier to sell, they will probably cut a pretty good deal.

In NY (noobs on demands address) there are tax advantages to trading with a dealer vs selling privately -- as you don't pay sales tax except on the difference between the new car cost less the trade in amount.

As for the squeaks my car has a few, more in the winter (cold=everything expands and rubs a bit more).

Two are in the door speaker area, one is on the dash and pillar.

I have yet to address either because they don't bother me much, but all you need to do is pop the panel and put a little foam here or there to buffer the plastic, and for the pillar stuff a little foam between the dash and pillar -- the first requires only a little ability (but if you get in there, why not replace the speakers...) and the second is something a 5 year old could do.

Noob- at least yours isnt an oil burner! Or is it?
If/when you get rid of it let me know what you end up with.
I'm going to test out a Fiest ST as soon as I can. But I'm like Jrobb, stuck with this car for a while.

You'll consider a Fiesta ST but not the new Focus ST? The Fiesta is a cool car, but MUCH smaller than an Impreza, and I'm guessing would therefore not ride as well.

Cold = everything contracts & becomes slightly looser causing the rattles to be more pronounced. If it expanded as it does in heat, it would fit tighter, rub less & rattle less.

yup that's what I meant, in any case, a little foam rubber buffers it and allows expansion/contraction without rubbing.

True. & if ya get it in there in the winter it'll fit even tighter in the summer. My rattles don't bother me but maybe now is the time to do that.

Pretty sure he's already had the dealer try to remedy that before. If I was that unhappy I'd probably not be spending more time putting foam & rubber in now.

I figure by the time it bothers me I will be pulling the door panels and upgrading the speakers anyway. Right now, I don't drive enough to care about the quality of the speaker or an occasional rattle -- my snow tires are loud enough but I don't even care about that, I am happy to have them and to be able to park the thing in snow banks and pull out without blinking an eye.

With my older cars, i would have been worried about getting stuck or having to carry a shovel...

Be careful removing plastic trim parts in the winter. I find that plastic parts are more likely to snap when they are cold. I replaced my head unit when it was still warm out because I didn't want to disassemble the center console in the cold.

Or a "shim" of a piece of paper on a long road trip =) That worked perfect for a rattle between the speaker cover and the A arm lol...

I look forward to seeing pics of your ambient lighting. If you could take pics of not only the end result, but of the job in progress, that'd be great!
