Default '91 Civic Si: Turning a Junk Car into a Junk Race Car

So, at local forum's Christmas Party / Dirty Santa Get-together I got a car.

It was a '91 Civic Si and it didn't come with an engine...or most of anything else, lol. And it most certainly didn't look this ^^^ good when we got it!

The intention for this car from the get-go was to participate in the 24 Hours of LeMons.

The debute race was the full 24 hour race at Eagles Canyon in May 2012.

We were behind in getting the car prepped, so we ran the entire weekend with no gauges...not even a fuel gauge! ...and finished 11th overall!

YouTube Highlights from the sister Miata car (Smike was rockin' the Miata like it owed him money).

Highlights are at 0:38, 5:50, and 9:50.

---

This time around, we are much better prepared, and are hoping for a top-5 spot at the 2012 season ender, Dec 28-30.

It was in the garage my new-to-me house. I don't know where they acquired it from, but it was the biggest one I've seen. Barely fit in my wagon taking it to the shop.

Just a few finishing touches left...

Got the Tape-R on the ground.

Got to keep the drivers in check.

Do you have a 710 cap?

You guys brought the car to the last PCA event we had here in the city but left early. Everything running alright? You were putting down some pretty good times before you left. Awesome project too!

Everything was fine. We just didn't want to beat on the engine/trans any more than we had to.

That drivetrain already has a full-24 hour race on it, so we were just being conservative.

LeMons recap day 1:

Sprinter and trailer towed beautifully from OKC to Eagles Canyon.

Meaghan and I got to the track just before nine and I started setting up the paddock.

By 11 everyone was in the house, and we started getting the loose ends tied up.

I ran and picked up our gas for the weekend, while Cody, Todd, Chris, and Jim started cutting out the lettering for our theme.

When I got back from the gas run, we borrowed ECR's shop to apply our lettering, and then went back to the paddock to finish getting ready for tech.

Tech went without a hitch, Jay and Frank (tech inspectors) complimented our ability to follow the rules, and our ability to do it well (that's my pride showing).

We then went thru BS. The BS judges were impressed with our bribes (Chris brought actual Hostess Goodies) and our willingness to listen to the judges' wants (I brought black flags they could gift other teams with). This gave us a class A rank (which all 88 and newer civics get) and one anti-penalty lap. Yes, when we start the race tomorrow, we will already have one lap on the books.

We then suited up drivers and started them onto the track. Jim took a run, since he's never seen this track before, then Cody, since he got so few Laps in May. Chris suited up, but the track went cold before he could get out.

Meanwhile I was asked to help a couple teams get their rigs together for safety tech. Several welds later, a mustang convertible somehow passed tech, and I installed a headrest backer for an integra. The integra guys said my weld on the fly was nicer than most every other weld in their car. I dunno if they were just blowing smoke, but they seemed legit.

After that we watched Todd spend hours looking for his phone only to lose Chris's phone while the rest of us did nit picky things and generally froze.

Meaghan's been a real trooper. Spending most of the holed up in the just as cold but less windy cab of the sprinter, she's come out to play when we needed her. I can only hope the weather is nicer tomorrow so she'll be able to enjoy the goings on.

Right now, we are winning, and I am supremely happy. That'll have to do.

LeMons recap, Day 2:

After a few last minute fixes and additions, Chris opened the day by going four off.

An hour an a half later (approximately an hour an a half into the race), he did it again.

The first time, it was cold and he basically burned our freebie. The second time the engine decided it was tired of its coolant and puked it all over the tires during braking. We got black flagged, but they chalked it up to mechanical.

Todd went next and about an hour in, he too went four off.

As our second black flag, we got a driver change, so Jim took the wheel, while Todd got to walk a dog and get his picture taken with the dog, his racing suit, and a bag of dog poop.

Jim did nicely for two hours, only going four off once. He actually beat his call into the penalty box, so they gave him a pass.

We let Todd back in the car to finish his stint, and after an hour, Cody took over.

About 45 minutes into his hour, he went four off and earned our third black flag.

We got one of our black flags back, and we had to draw some twinkies and some anti-union stuff and make it look real nice.

We did and were graciously allowed back on the track for about forty minutes.

I took the last stint, and actually managed to be the only driver on our team who didn't go four off on Saturday, a personal best.

After the race, we picketed, CEO Cody declared bankruptcy, and the judges signed off on the liquidation.

We took the car back to the paddock, did some simple maintenance, and totally rethemed the car. Pics will be available tomorrow.

We then ate dinner, did some arts and crafts, and tucked into bed in 12th place.

Four laps ahead of a wicked fast but currently broken mustang, and 14 laps behind a deceptively fast 626 dressed as a Mini Cooper saloon.

LeMons recap, day 3:

A brisk morning greeted us Sunday. The car started (a plus) and we spent the next thirty minutes finishing the new theme.

Todd hit the track and became the first driver all weekend to complete a non-end-of-the-race stint without going all four off.

Two hours or so into the race day, we traded Todd for Jim who went about an hour fifteen and as high as tenth position before finding the dirt with the tires.

That brought out Cody who maintained a reasonable pace considering our mis-adventures. Eventually, tho, the mud beckoned, and Cody answered its call. Second (or third?) black flag got Cody shrink wrapped to a chair whilst the rest of us bashed him with pillows.

I splashed three more gallons of gas in the car as my turn behind the wheel came up, about thirty minutes ahead of schedule.

"Finally," I thought, "two hours and fifteen minutes of seat time in a decent car with just a few laps between me and a top ten finish."

A hour and a half later, after driving the car to ninth place, with a half a lap lead on tenth... the right axle sheared off at the hub, destroying the bearing and letting the wheel grind to a stop in the caliper. On the inside line of an uphill corner (10) just after a corner worker who had been MIA for most of the day. Yeah. Visions of the camaro/Saturn wreck at sears point danced in my head as I waited for assistance.

Push truck tried and failed to push. Flat bed wrecker picked me up and delivered me to the parking lot.

We assessed the damage, knew we didn't have the materials to fix it, and started packing it in.

Race ends, we go to the awards ceremony in full costume and are awarded Judges Choice for sticking to our theme AND retheming the car overnight.

Clever solution to our broken car/trailer problem is devised by Cody, we eat a dinner at Fuzzy's, and we get safely home by nine PM.

In all, a very good weekend, and as perfectly fitting as a LeMons weekend can be.
