You're all talking as if you've never had an off. I certainly have. There are several people on this forum that I'll never criticize their driving. 1 of which is kfoote. Maybe he went lazy and didnt put snows on. Everyone has an off from time to time.

If you think he's a bad driver:
1. join COM
2. build a competitive PB car
3. ???
4. profit!

I went poor and didn't put the snows on. I figured that the 2000 mile old tires I have on my car are better in the snow than my 2 corded and 2 bald snow tires.

Also note that I DID NOT HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, nor did I come close to doing so, nor did I go into the other lane where there was traffic going the other direction. I probably didn't come within 30 feet of the car ahead at the closest point. Because of how the road is cambered and how slick it was, had I stopped going forwards with the car in the lane I was in pointed in the correct direction, the car still would have slid sideways off the road into the snowbank. The road really was that slick, and there really was that much banking in the road at that point. I have enough experience with all types of tires in all kinds of conditions to determine whether snow tires would have helped, and in this case, they would not have.

ChesterWRX sounds amazingly like a cop I encountered about 15 years ago after I hit black ice going 20 MPH and went off the road (in a FWD car that I had run HPDE events with, and was very familiar with, with snow tires, on a corner marked by a yellow sign at 25 MPH), who said I was going "too fast for conditions". So I asked him how fast was appropriate in that situation. He couldn't give me an answer, probably because when he hit the ice at 10 MPH, he went off the road into a snowbank, and he slipped and fell on the road when he got out of the car because of the ice.

shooting for mid November and hoping that my late October trip to Montreal doesn't force my hand to do it earlier

It's far too warm for winter tires right now. You're just causing them to wear out faster.

So you'd rather be "so sad" and burn up snow tires rather than swap them in late November? OK...

Nope and not going to. I bought a POS to drive in the salt. Mine is staying in the garage under a cover all winter from now on. Somebody buy my snows! They are in the classifieds.

I am used to a car with all-seasons for regular tires, so the swap to winter tires was OK to be a little late... Paying a bit more attention now that I have 3 season tires.

I was going to target the end of the month to swap them out, but I checked the NOAA data (some parts of the fox are still running) and it says for Boston 5.6 days is the normal count of days in November when the low temp drops below freezing (high temp below freezing has a normal of 0) and average temp is 51.5 to 38. December, OTOH, has a normal of 20.7 days with a low below freezing and 5.1 with a high below freezing, temp range 44.3 to 32.5.

So I will target mid November, which gives me a week or two to fail to follow through before the serious need starts.

different strokes.... the snows are way cheaper to replace than the regular tires... non-issue.

*going off memory... the "summer" tires that come with the Rex's are rated for what? above 50*F?

my main thing / personal pref. is 6 months with each. hell, once the snows and regular tires wear, i'll probably dump the steelies and go with all seasons. assuming I still have the car.

i'm trying to sell it. not the best commuter car IMO. 2.5 hrs a day in x 3 days a week is killing me...

Wheels and suspension will be swapped mid November. Screw turning up the coils for the winter.

Default winter setup

just got the legacy wagon out of storage with the snow tires on it and cleaned the car up to get it ready for winter. I will be putting the STi away in storage most likely November 1st.
