Time to say goodbye ... or rebuild?!

Hello everyone,

I have an 04 WRX w 147K that is misfiring due to 0 compression in cylinder #3. It's nearly stock, sold everything but my catless up pipe, and wheels. The reason for my post is to get some opinions on what I should do.

I've gotten a couple quotes on a rebuild. I'm in MD, Andrewtech quoted me over the a phone either a 2.0 block for around $5-$5.5K, or a 2.5 block w used sti turbo, injectors and pump for $6-$6.5K approximately. I think the latter would be a better choice, but I have my concerns about dropping so much into an older car.

My goals are to have a reliable daily driver, and having additional power would be nice too. Now my biggest concern is what is going to go next? Its an unknown factor and thats whats making the decision difficult. What do you guys think, is it worth rebuilding, even though all the other parts are going to have almost 150K miles.

The other alternative would be purchasing a used car (beater) for around $4-5K as a daily driver but I doubt I'll be able to find something as fun & reliable as the WRX w the rebuild.

Is that with them installing it and doing all the labor or is that just the parts?

This includes labor, and all parts he said they normally charge around $5K - $5,500 for rebuild. It was a rough estimate but was told a 2.0 block and a 2.5 would be the same cost & that if we went with the 2.5 it would probably cost an additional $1K for a used sti turbo, injectors, and pump.

You could just give me your WRX and 7k and I'll give you a Legacy GT Limited 5 speed with 80k.

Take this for what it's worth but I had a completely custom build with rotated GT3076, new shortblock, forged pistons, fuel system, blah, blah, blah for about $8K all-in at one of the best shops in the Subie business. For comparison purposes only.

I'd say if you're going to spend that kind of money, definitely go with the 2.5.

You can get a running longblock 2.0 for less than $2k. Drop it in yourself and save $$. Plus you won't have to get a tune or anything else as nothing will have changed.

What about getting a rebuild 2.0 from Sinclair (sdmideas) here forum. Sold a number of rebuild 2.0 engine just the ShortBlock for $1200. Maybe he even do a longblock for you or get shortblock and have built up. This will save quite bit money. Other idea is get OEM shortblock new from online for $1700.
