For a no drone/low drone option for a hatchback I'd go with a Cobb DP + GReddy SP Elite for a stage 2 set up.

Ahhhhhh......this is where my choice of place to live has paid off. I'm in the woods and the garage is 200 feet from the house, so I'm not going to wake up anyone.

Neighbors? Let me go through the list......One has an old MGB with an aluminum Buick V8 in it. Another has a 66 Malibu that he swapped the auto for a rock crusher and put in a 396. Next to him is a family business where the dad (my dad's age) has a little collection....67 427 4 speed vette, 66 Mustang convertible from a Philco sales rep (owned by ford), 68 Road Runner, a total restoration from the rust up called a Dual Phaeton (48 total made...his is sn45). He restored, rebuilt and sold the only 58 Desoto with working fuel injection http://www.allpar.com/cars/desoto/electrojector.html

You get the picture. I make noise, they look out the window because they want to see what the car is....in a good way.

"40's kinda old for a WRX owner"? sure hope not. I have a '2012 Hatch with Cobb cat downpipe, Cobb air box and open source stage 2 mod..and I just turned 60!!

I'm also in agreement with many here, once I added the downpipe, the stock exhaust sounded better. Don't forget the hatch has a better flowing exhaust system than the sedan, it really opened up the stock exhaust ,sounds better.

You have to go to a large Subie event and check them out ,youtube videos just too much variability. I'm considering the subie exhaust or the Nvida after the snow melts..

Better factor in the wife/kid here too, nothing will piss the wife off than having to scream to have a conversation.

Even after having my NSX for 20 yrs my wife still hates the engine sound when I stomp on it ( hard to believe anyone would hate that engine)

Lately she 's OK with the noise, but I think she's going deaf like me...

TXS catback with Invidia catted downpipe was very quiet! Barely any drone at all and it sounds very un-obnoxious yet when you put your foot down you get great noise.

Full Nameless TBE, and Cobb stage 2, and don't forget to Dynamat your interior Floors and doors, No highway drone, loud when you get on it, and quiet when driving easy, my wife never complained about the sound, just the rough ride, and We are both in our 50"s

I'm 35 and the cobb CBE was to loud on my '12 WRX. At the moment I am leaning towards getting the Borla exhaust. People on the iwsti forum have said they like the mellowness of it. I have a friend of mine who has a Borla on his STI and it does sound nice.

Great feedback! Thanks again everyone.

I'm thinking of going with a Nameless DP since it is good quality and they've been responsive answering my questions. For tuning, I'm probably going to go with an e-tune from Torqued Performance. After reading some PM's from other forum members, I think I might go opensource instead of AP. I'm kind of a techie and it feels like I'm wimping out if I don't. Plus it's cheaper of course. I'll probably wait on a CBE for now... still deciding.

On a side note, does anyone have recommendations on tail light wraps that change the brake light portion red, leaving the center white? I know there are tons of them out there, but are any better quality/easier to install than others? Thanks.

As far as being old... I didn't mean to suggest I'm TOO OLD to own a WRX, just I'm much older than your average owner. For the old guys out there, how many times have you had a random kid come up to you and say "sweet car man"? I've even had other subie owners pull up along side while driving and try to have conversations with me. They've never been older than 25 or so. That being said, I have noticed more middle aged folks driving the newer WRX sedans lately.

Anyway, didn't mean to offend anyone. Thanks again for all the info.

My 2013 Hatch came with the SPT cat back from the dealer.. I was a little worried that my 5yo daughter would have issues with it.. she hasnt said a word. The wife says she can hear me coming up the hill in the development, but I think its a perfect match of sound when you want it and mellow when you dont... oh, and I am 37...

No offence taken! I enjoyed responding to the post..and yes , I agree, more younger guys give me the thumbs up for the Subie than on the NSX. To be honest, there are few stick shift hatchbacks with all wheel drive out there for New Eng winters. I loved my S4 avant but to get a new one was double the wrx cost. Wished I would have gone STI but was swayed on by some that felt the regular WRX could be modified for less. Guess the $8K difference just allot for a second car. I still have the NSX for good weather.
I love the raw engine sound and vibrations of the Subie at times over the NSX.

I'll throw in my own personal opinion on this

The way you drive doesn't really relate to your age, for the most part. It has to do with your personality and how you feel about driving in general. I am in my mid 30s and, by most people's standards, I drive aggressively. I know people significantly older than me that are just as aggressive as me or even more so. Their driving style and car preference reflects their personality too. I work with few young guys in mid 20s that drive slower than my mother. Seriously. It's painful to watch. You'd think they'd be crazed maniac behind the wheel. Instead, they drive corollas and drive 5 under at all times. Again, if I had to sum it up, their driving style overall reflects who they are as a person. If you like cars, you'll tolerate louder exhausts, more NVH, and probably not drive a corolla to work every day. You will probably never drive an econobox that is devoid of any excitement. It's not who you are. Kids, in general, will put up and tolerate a lot of noise. How would they know better? If all they ever knew was a loud sports car, they don't know that cars can be quiet. They'll just adapt to whatever you expose them to. It's the adults that you have to worry about. So, the moral of the story is, if you're going to have kids, get the loudest thing your spouse will tolerate.

I have a Q300 in a 2006 wagon. I've found that my newly-installed JDM 6-speed has eliminated the drone by upping the revs a bit, especially on the highway.

If you're an "old man," it should mean build it to satisfy any ongoing or midlife crisis.

Get a built motor with a Dom 1.5 and a Q300 and a 6-speed. Believe me, everyone will be happier.

Another 40 year old here - who ya calling old.

Don't go to loud - its fun in the beginning but it can get old. I have a Prodrive oval for my 04 - just loud enough, but not too much to bother neighbors or draw to much attention.

How could you be too old for an econobox with a turbo?

Just ordered a Tactrix cable, so it looks like I'm going with opensource and a tune from Torqued Performance. I'll wait to make sure I get the drivers and software all working before purchasing the stage 1 map. It's only a few bucks more to purchase the stage 1/2 maps separately, so I might as well go stage 1 before jumping to stage 2 especially since I still haven't made up my mind what I'm doing exhaust-wise.

Awesome, good route to take. The TP map will also come with car definitions for ecu flash. RomRaider has its own definitions built off of the website that you can download, it'll ask you to download them everytime you start it up to log but don't worry about that, just re-attach the definitions file when you start it up everytime. It's what I've had to do .

I'm hoping for input on taking my 2011 WRX hatchback to stage 2, with a catted dp and exhaust. I'd like a little better performance and a nicer sound. I've read through many threads on these forums, and think I have a decent idea of what I'd like... unfortunately the most difficult part is determining how the exhaust will sound (even with all the videos floating around). The main consideration is that I'm in my 40's (and relatively old for a WRX owner ) with a wife and two kids, so there are certain things that may matter a bit more to me than other owners... If anyone has valuable input and would like to help me decide, feel free to comment.

Some criteria:

1) It has to be quiet-ish. I would like to the exhaust to sound deeper and "meaner", but not really louder in the car (especially at speed). Outside the car, it can be slightly louder, but again the focus would be on a deeper, rumbling sound and not high volume. NO DRONE whatsoever. Of course, it can't sound stock or be so quiet that it was a waste of money.

2) It has to be high quality, but not too expensive. I don't have a large amount of disposable income, but I also don't have the time or patience to mess around with crappy products. I like supporting "good" companies that offer a well made product and support it before/after the purchase. Easy installation and fitment are also key.

3) Continuing on with #2, I want to spend enough money to reach my goals, but no more and no less. In other words, if a mid pipe would be nice but not worth the extra $$$ for someone like me, then maybe I shouldn't consider it. Other input on if certain products are worth it or not, and price vs performance suggestions are definitely welcomed. There is very little chance I'll go beyond stage 2.

4) I want it to look nice, but not stand out. Think slightly nicer than stock, but it definitely can't stick out the back or bottom of the car or be gaudy. It also has to hold up to upstate NY winters and being used as a dd.

Right now, I am sort of leaning towards nameless catted DP, with their Magnaflow mufflered axle back (or maybe 5" exhaust). I was going to keep the stock midpipe to save money. Anyone have experience with the nameless on the hatch? How about pics of the 10% gloss black finish installed? What effect would the nameless midpipe have on the sound for this setup? Are there other quality, mid priced exhausts that would fit the bill? (I listened to a video of the Cobb exhaust and it sounded great, but the price is higher and its hard to tell without experiencing in it person.)

I'll probably go with the Cobb Accessport for tuning, and buy a custom map from an online tuner (suggestions?).

I am 32 years old so I know what you mean. I would Highly suggest:

Perrin catted downpipe
Process West TMIC
Grimmspeed Electronic Boost Controller
SPT Axle Back Exhaust and Mid-Pipe
You might need a grimmspeed downpipe adapter

As for a tune, I would suggest an Open Source Tune from a reputable tuner, but others might say go COBB. That choice I leave up to you sir.

You will be very happy with the HP/TQ results and sound levels. If you want more HP/TQ then it is a good start.

Good luck!

Hey thanks for the feedback. I'm curious why you recommended the Perrin DP over other good brands? Also, why the TMIC and EBC for just stage 2?

Thanks again!

Quietest Stage 2 setup will be a catted downpipe and (1 being the quietest):

1) stock catback
2) SPT catback
3) Invidia Q300

Those are your quiet options. If I were going Stage 2, I would probably just get a catless downpipe and stick with the stock catback. All the gains and minimal noise.

I'm running the COBB SF intake, Perrin catted down pipe, Invidia Q300, Turbo XS BOV (full reciprocating) Stage 2 OTS SLWG (over boosting) and Turbo Smart boost gauge. I'm very happy with my setup. The Q300 is loud in my opinion with drone but its cool with me. At the end of the day, go with what makes you happy and is within your budget.

The bigger TMIC will help with heat soak due to the stock TMIC is small. EBC will help with over boosting and helps with the tuning. Since I over boost on the Stage 2 map, I plan on upgrading the TMIC (cause I’m going to a pro tune), EBC, and external wastage. Probably going to do the fuel pump as well.

I have the catted Perrin DP and SPT Exhaust and love the sound. Its not to loud and possibly a good fit for what you want. I say get the TMIC for more cooling and better response, but not needed for stage 2. You may not need the EBC depending on what tuning route you go.

39 years old here. had my wrx for 5 years. im running tomei el headers, perrin catted downpipe and a borla catback. mines the sedan so the 2 mufflers sounds much different than a hatch. i also put a bottle type resonator in the rear of my midpipe. its overall not really that loud unless i stomp on it. im running the racecomp gt worx strut and spring setup too. its quite firm but much better than stock. my wife doesnt complain about the ride or the noise so thats always a plus!
