Exclamation Can't make phone calls while driving

Okay, some a$$ wipe at Subaru decided that you shouldn't make phone calls while driving (Then why put in a hands free voice activated bluetooth phone system????). This is hands down the stupidest thing that Subaru has EVER done because now I have to dial on my phone when I need to make a call while driving.

So does anyone know how to fix this stupidity? I don't think it's the handbrake, cause you stop at a light and suddenly it works. I'm sure somewhere inside there is a setting, I bet the don't do this crap in Japan, probably get lynched for it.

I like how they decontented the US steering wheel to not include radio controls because it's more 'driver-centric' and then they equip a crappy touch screen navigation system that requires you to take your eyes off the road and hands off the wheel to perform basic functions.

I really hate the GUI and lack of actual tactile buttons for main functions.

As for the phone numbers: You can't ENTER a number, but you can actually press to dial incoming calls, outgoing calls, and speed dials. I added numbers I call while driving to the speed dials list, thus allowing me to dial while driving. Pretty certain the system locks you of DIALING a number manually only.

Until car audio companies realize that we don't need the head unit to do the dialing for us when we own a smartphone with voice parsing, these kinds of systems are only going to frustrate.

I can perform more functions in my phone using a single button and my voice while riding my motorcycle than I can with either of my bluetooth head units in my cars.

You can make calls from the recent call list or speak the number.

My Windows Phone does voice-activation, so I can just say names to call. While driving, though, it doesn't play the text message chime or read them off to me, but it will when I'm parked. Too safe. Too safe. SMH

Yep. With as small as the buttons are, I don't know that I want guys with as much rage as the OP trying to dial a 10 digit number while driving down the road. Sounds dangerous to me. I have trouble going between radio presets on the touchscreen, but I still really like the headunit overall.

They really should have made buttons for those. That and the horrible GUI piss me off. Well, my passenger side speaker rattle too, but I didn't get the car for its audio/infotainment systems.

For the few times the people I'm calling aren't saved under the "speed dial/favorites" menu, I just dial on the actual iphone. It still plays the call through the head unit.

I am wondering how hard it would be to take the system apart and program a new GUI into it. I'm willing to bet that the GUI is written in JAVA.

On and all calling functions are greyed out when I'm moving.

Hit contacts. Hit speed dial. Hit one of your speed dial contacts. Hit the call button. I've done it.

Tried it, doesn't work on mine. The buttons are all grayed out and don't work.

Just found out it's written in Flash: FlexUI. Think I'm gonna see if I can find me a programmer who wants to make a few bucks and reprogram it.

What phone are you using, and is it paired with the bluetooth?

This works for me:
  1. Hit voice button on head unit
  2. Say "Handsfree"
  3. Say "Call [person's name][optional: phone type]"
  4. Say "Yes" when prompted
Alternatively, I can say the number to dial.
