Agreed, solder is best. And I prefer heat-shrink tubing over electrical tape.

I like solder sleeves like this! Kills 2 stones with 1 bird...or something like that!

Interesting product. Looks expensive, especially since you would need to stock different diameters for different tasks.

I just solder, and have multi-pack of different sized heat shrink tubing. Never had a wiring failure at any of my soldered joints.

True, unless you happen to have a bunch laying around...they shrink down too so you can use the same size for quite a few different wire sizes.

Hi, I am working on getting a rear cam in my Impreza and have tried contacting SXVdc a couple of times without any luck. Does anyone have a lead on a harness or know what the parts (connector and contacts) are so that I could make one?

Thanks!

A little bit off track, but my buddies 2013 Outback (Legacy), uses the rear view mirror for the back up display. He has the auto dimming/compass with the homelink. I wonder if that is a special mirror or the same mirror with some add on? I have the same mirror, or at least thought I had until I saw a TV screen in his mirror one day.

They sell those on eBay, new egg, and other discount retailers.

Default Could use some help, Adding a rear camera

Ok, so this is my first post.
I have a 2010 Impreza Hatchback. I bought a wireless camera and I'm mid way through I'd say right now but stuck.

I managed to mount the camera to the plate, drill hole near the left side plate light. snaked the wire up through the hatch and down to the rubber grommet.
I can not get the wire from the top of hatch down the side to grab it.

I've tried many times with different cables etc. If I could take the side plastics off it would be easy but all I got is the small piece where the seatbelt comes out of off, the small light near the back off and pulled the foam thing out at the base on left side.

Anyone do this yet? and pictures? Youtube?
I plan on installing a switch so I can flick it on and off at will. This is so when I use my trailer I can keep and eye on it.

Any ideas?

I can try to post some pics?

Oh, Does anyone make a repair book for this car? I've had no luck so far.
I asked Subaru and they want you to pay to access their site info and it's not cheap!

Thanks
Alan

Edited to say I heard back on the harness. He has been swamped lately with requests so his queue is a bit backed up, so if anyone else has contacted him just be more patient than I am...

I routed the wires inside the factory wire loom. I had to remove all the electrical tape from the factory and re-taped it back up.

This is how I wired the power to the camera.

How did you turn off the line that come from the factory HU.

You have to go into the hidden menu screen that is available on the Limited's head unit. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2340207

It's certainly not OE, but it cost under $60 complete.
I used a $35 camera from a US Ebay seller.

The worst part was dremeling a hole in my brand new car!

Thank you SXVdc for the help and the harness!

I just installed the camera the same one you did so i have a question about turn the guide line off from the camera. Do you know how?

Yeah, take the car out of reverse. I just used the SVXdc harness, grounded the spade terminal to one of the screws on the side of the radio and it was good to go.

If I were to hazard a guess I would say that you can. I don't believe there is a special HD Radio antenna for the unit. It either pulls from the main antenna feed or it has a built-in antenna for it. This would make a great upgrade for a premium!

As long as you're doing a HU swap, why not consider a non-OEM unit like one of the nice Pioneers?

Sorry to bring a semi-dead thread back from the dead, but is it possible to use the new 2013 impreza camera if you have one of the older head units?

I'm gonna start looking at OEM subaru sites to see if i can find the camera

The only draw back is the compatability of the stock stuff. ie: usb jack, 3mm audio jack, (both in console and can be adapted) SWC's (which I know there are also adapters), speed sensing volume, BT mic, and the day time illumination. I know much of this can be dealt with, but the OEM is plug and play with everything already there. I'm not knocking aftermarket. I know that in many cases it will yield better sound. It really comes down to how much adapting someone is willing to do. My personal plan will be to add an amp and upgrade the factory speakers, and of course gain a BU camera.

To another posters question, look on another back up camera thread here. There is a part number for the Subi factory camera now. I hope to find a 631UD HU waiting for me when I get home that I got my hands on. The direction I go with a camera depends on what I find behind the radio. Maybe, just maybe, there is a connector behind the radio on my 2013 Premium for the camera wiring. I doubt it, but the Subaru e-store now lists the trim piece for the sedan trunk with the camera opening. I will be keeping people posted on that. If there is no wiring in place then I will most likely go aftermarket since I will have to run wire to the front. The factory camera is $$$. Aftermarket is way less.

**The HU I posted a link to for stupid money on e-bay had no bids when the auction closed. I saw that coming. In any event, it may show up again for less, or someone can contact the seller and make an offer. IIRC, it was a salvage place.**

Ok, forgive me if this is covered in detail within this forum thread, I've read through several times, but I'm still unclear on whether I truly need the 8pin harness from svxdc. I'm just not clear on where I'm getting power for the OEM option.

I'm planning on getting the OEM camera, but I'm still a bit on the fence when looking at the kenwood.

The OEM seems to integrate the best, but if the job is any more difficult, I will go with the kenwood instead.

Since you have a 2012 Impreza (not WRX or STI), the CM631UD will be completely plug-and-play in your car. See this post for more info.

Unless something has changed mid model year, you would need the harness SVXdc has available. I'm not sure of the build date on my car but I took delivery near the end of October. Unless it was well hidden, I did not see a connector when I put the CM631UD into my car. I would have expected it to be near the other leads, taped back, but it was not.

General rule of thumb: If Subaru doesn't offer an OEM camera as a dealer-installable option (post delivery) for your particular car model, then your car is not pre-wired for a camera. In Foresters that are pre-wired, the harness is already plugged into the back of the HU, so the only work you or the dealer needs to do will be at the tailgate.

So if you're keeping a factory head unit, and if your car is not pre-wired for the OEM camera, you'll definitely want my 8-pin or 16-pin rear camera harness (depending on OEM HU model). That's the easiest way to connect the camera into the HU.

The remaining thing you'll need to decide is whether to include the 6 Volt power lead on my harness. For an OEM camera, you'll definitely want that. It turns out that many aftermarket cameras will also work from 6V (some even as low as 3.5V).

For Subaru HUs besides the Fujitsu Ten nav, you can usually power an aftermarket camera from the reverse lights (unless their instructions say otherwise. One example).

The OEM Fujitsu Ten nav HUs must see a video signal from the camera during boot up (or the HU will decide no camera is present, and leave the feature disabled). So for this HU, you must power the camera from the HU's 6V supply, or from +12V Accessory (on whenever your key is on). For a camera that needs more than 6V, you can use the HU's power lead to run a small 6V relay, which in turn switches the camera's 12V supply on/off.

Arguments against choosing an OEM camera for a car that is not pre-wired for it:
  • The OEM cameras are very expensive. The Crosstrek's camera is obscenely expensive (more than $200 !).
  • They require 6V power (so unless you want to build a 12-to-6 V converter circuit, you'll need to get that power from the OEM HU)
  • They have a short harness with a proprietary plug. You'll need to either:
    1. Cut off that plug and solder on your own plug, or
    2. Buy the OEM tailgate/trunk harness that includes the camera socket (~$40), cut off the segment with that socket, and solder on your own cable.
In both cases, you'll need to add a longer cable to reach from the trunk to the HU.
  • Since the car isn't pre-wired for the OEM camera, you'll need to drill or saw a hole to mount the camera. So the job is no easier than what you'd have to do for an aftermarket camera (and there are some that look the same as OEM -- check out the Rydeen DUO and MINy cameras).
