Default holset HY35 or Garrett gt30r

so its time for a turbo upgrade and I have been heavily debating these two trubos...

First my mods:

perrin FMIC
1000cc injectors
full exhaust
big maf intake
tgv delete
forged pistons/rods
POS 20g turbo

not quite sure what my power goal is but im thinking around 400whp on pump.

currently putting down 310awhp and 350awtq

pros of the HY35:
cost
air flow
long lasting

pros of garrett:
spool speed
long lasting
oil and water cooled.

Both are great turbos and have made cars with good power and last forever. from what I have read the holset will make more boost at a lower rpm and spool about the same as my 20g (about 3500@15psi), but im not sure if the garrett will make much of a difference.

There isnt much info on the holset but have seen a few cars with it that made great power. looking for some advice from others that have some experience with the two. Either one will take some custom work as I will be going rotated.

thanks in advance for any info.

I honestly don't think the HX35 has truly been tested yet on our platform. I ran one on the STi I recently sold and I feel like I have unfinished business with it and plan to run another one on my new Bugeye project. I'd like to see what more timing/boost, on a built block will yeild. They have potential.

That said, I've seen some very nice numbers posted on the GTX3076R. They are very nice turbo's. For a street car, the GTX3076R is what I would run if the Holset doesn't work out.

What rotated kit will you be running?

I have seen a few here in the north west with the HY35's and many more witht the garrett. the one that I have seen a few times was putting down about 500awhp, not sure what supporting mods he had tho.

what about the turbo made you feel like you had "unfinished business"?

^ I was running it on a weak worn out motor so we had it tuned very conservatively. There was lots more power to be made but we couldn't take advantage of it. I have another hx35 so I want to finish what I started and see what it will do with a strong motor and solid tune..... and post my results so other people can see how the Holset performs.

500whp would be perfect.

You were always an inspiration in the holset thread from this summer. I have a hx35 8 blade compressor with a .63 garret exhaust housing bolted to my v7 ej207. I plan on pushing it into the 21-22 psi range on 93 pump. I hope that's going to net me around 350 whp hopefully more. Just have to finish up some odds and ends. Should be tuning in early march if weather permits. I'll be sure to post up results.

I think im going to go with the HY for the smaller hot side with better spool.

ill be sure to put up some pictures of the process of fabbing up some parts for this build as I go along.

Good to hear. There is a pretty lengthy holset thread that has some great info and experiences.

Do you have a link? I have been searching and either pics are gone or not much info in the thread.

For you HX guys, when did you see boost? My 20g now hits 15 psi about 3.5k and have heard the holset is about the same. I can get one for about 300 used. The same one that was in the 500 hp car...
Just debating if I should save some cash and get a little more lag.

You should also check out Borg Warner turbos. I just finished a build with an airwerks 7670 (borg warners 30r) and couldn't be happier. I hit full boost, 24psi, by 4100 rpm and put down 400/380 on a very low reading mustang dyno on pump gas. That wasn't even one of their EFR turbos which should spool even quicker.

Important mods:

Perrin rotated kit
Perrin FMIC
ID1000 injectors
Full Blown 340 fuel pump
Aeromotive FPR
Borg Warner 7670
AWDTuning Stage 2 motor
